- "Parley. I invoke the right of parley. According to the Code of the Brethren, set down by the pirates Morgan and Bartholomew, you have to take me to your captain."
- ―Elizabeth Swann to Pintel and Ragetti
Bartholomew was a Pirate Lord active around the time of the Second Brethren Court. He was known to have set down the Pirate code of the Brethren, in the Pirata Codex, with Sir Henry Morgan, at the dawn of the golden age of piracy.
Biography[]
- "At any rate, the second Brethren Court drew up the Pirate Code which has served us well. Two of the Pirate Lords, Morgan and Bartholomew, figured it out and wrote it down, and that's what we've all lived by ever since."
- ―Hector Barbossa
Nothing is known about this Pirate Lord's life, except that he was present on the second meeting of the Brethren Court at some point during the 17th century. Together with another Pirate Lord, the Welshman Henry Morgan, he made the Code of the Pirate Brethren, which was recorded in the Pirata Codex at the dawn of the age of piracy.[3]
Personality and traits[]
- "Bartholomew was everything a pirate should be: fierce, quick to anger, violent, conniving, the whole package. He used to stick burning brands in his long, black beard when he fought, so it looked like his whole head was smoking. Scared the devil out of the cowards he attacked."
- ―Grandmama
Violent, conniving, and quick to anger, Bartholomew was one of the fiercest pirates of his time. Tall as house, during the fight he would stick burning brands in his long, black beard, making a devilish appearance that would scare his opponents. He never smiled, the fact that would only emphasize his fearsome reputation.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- There is some contention as to the identity of Morgan's partner, who is referred to only as "Bartholomew".
- This individual was commonly held to be Bartholomew Roberts: he and Morgan appear together as spirits in the non-canonical comic The Buccaneer's Heart! and make several references to the Code. However, Bartholomew Roberts wasn't even born during the Second Brethren Court, when the Pirata Codex was made. Although, it is possible that Roberts simply finished the Pirata Codex after he grew up and became a pirate.
- A second candidate is Bartolomeo Português, who was known to have established one of the earliest sets of rules that comprised the real-life pirate code around the 1660's. It may also refer to one Bartholomew Sharp, active 1679-82 as they both lived during the same time as Henry Morgan.
- The mention of the "code of Morgan and Bartholomew" in the Pirates of the Caribbean video game is anachronistic because the game is set in 1630, before Morgan and Bartholomew made the Code.
