- "I believe, Captain, that this frigate is a pirate vessel. We need to think about what to do when she catches us, in an hour or so."
"Mr. Sparrow, you're not listening. That ship is almost certainly a Royal Navy vessel, purchased from Blackwall shipyard. Whoever has heard of a pirate possessing such a ship?" - ―Jack Sparrow and Nathaniel Bainbridge about Venganza
Blackwall Yard, colloquially referred to as Blackwall shipyard or simply Blackwall, was a shipyard on the River Thames in Blackwall, an area in London, England. The shipyard was known for making the best ships, engaged in ship building and later ship repairs. The most well-known ship built at Blackwall was the pirate vessel Venganza, a Blackwall frigate originally a British Royal Navy vessel called HMS Peregrine.
In 1607, the East India Company decided to build its own ships and leased a yard in Deptford. Initially, this change of policy proved profitable, but the situation changed as the Deptford yard came to be expensive to run. In 1614, the East India Company outgrew Deptford and ordered William Burrell to begin work on a new yard for repair, construction and loading of out-going ships. The site Burrell selected was at Blackwall, with the new yard fully operational by 1617. The yard and its facilities were enlarged repeatedly. Later on in the 17th century, the East India Company reverted to its original practice of hiring vessels. In many cases the owners who chartered their vessel to the East India Company had them built at Deptford and Blackwall.
History[]
- "Don't be payin' any attention to that frog-eater, Cap'n Sparrow, sir. He knows the best ships are made by Blackwall, and set sail from English ports."
- ―Lucius Featherstone on Etienne de Ver
By the Age of Piracy, Blackwall shipyard was a location known in Blackwall, an area in London, England, where many ships were made and set sail from English ports. The British Royal Navy owned the majority of the frigates produced by the Blackwall shipyard, namely Blackwall frigates, having procured and purchased them. One such Royal Navy vessel, the HMS Peregrine, was a Blackwall frigate that became the pirate vessel Venganza. Some sailors, namely Captain Nathaniel Bainbridge and Lucius Featherstone, believed the idea of a pirate having a Blackwall frigate as a vessel was far-fetched.
