A blunderbuss (or musketoon) was a type of gunpowder anti-personel gun. It was a muzzle-loading firearm with a short, large caliber barrel, which is flared at the muzzle, and when used with small musket shot packed in, could wipe out scores of hostiles at a time. The blunderbuss was an early form of shotgun adapted to military and defensive use.
History[]
During the battle between the Black Pearl and the Interceptor, several members of Captain Hector Barbossa's cursed crew, including Katracho, used blunderbusses in the fight.[1] Over a year later, during the battle of Singapore, Cotton emerged from a barrel to fire a blunderbuss at the attacking East India Trading Company soldiers. During the battle of Calypso's maelstrom, Marty used a double-barreled variation of the weapon to ward off attacking members of Davy Jones's crew as they descended from the Flying Dutchman onto the Black Pearl.[2] In 1751, Barbossa used a blunderbuss to shoot Pierre Kelly in the leg during Jack Sparrow's forced wedding.[3][4][5]
Behind the scenes[]
- Blunderbusses first appeared in the 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.[1] They were first identified by name in The Brightest Star in the North: The Adventures of Carina Smyth,[4] a tie-in novel to the 2017 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.[5]
- In Dead Men Tell No Tales movie graphic novel, Hector Barbossa shot Pierre Kelly with his pistol,[6] not with his blunderbuss like in the film.[5]
- In LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game, Marty is equipped with a blunderbuss which fires explosive rounds.[7]
