- "My Lord, you have a visitor."
- ―The butler to Weatherby Swann
This man was a butler, most notably a servant to Governor Weatherby Swann in the mansion located in Port Royal, Jamaica. On the day of Captain James Norrington's promotion ceremony, Governor Swann provided a dress and corset for his daughter Elizabeth, a fitting which was interrupted by the servant who announced a visitor, young blacksmith William Turner. The butler remained in the mansion through the remainder of the day and on the night of the attack on Port Royal by the Black Pearl, with a crew of cursed pirates led by Captain Hector Barbossa. During the siege, several pirates rushed for the mansion and began hammering on the front door, prompting the butler to answer it. As Elizabeth headed toward the top of the stairs, reaching the railing that looked over the foyer, she saw the butler approaching the front door. Elizabeth started to shout, but she was too late as the butler opened the door to a mob of pirates, led by Pintel and Ragetti. Pintel sarcastically greeted the butler with "Hello chum!", aimed his pistol directly at the butler, then fired the gun, shooting him in the head. Elizabeth screamed as the butler crumpled to the ground. The butler's body remained on the ground as the pirates either pillaged the mansion or dashed in hot pursuit of Elizabeth. Estrella, a maid in the governor's household, screamed as she noticed the butler's body while fleeing the mansion.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
The Butler first appeared in Irene Trimble's junior novelization for the 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,[1] where he was played by Paul Keith.[2] The character was originally identified as a "butler" in Trimble's junior novelization,[4] as well as in the end credits of the film.[2] He was also identified as a "servant" in Elizabeth Rudnick's junior novelization,[5] as well as at least one interview with Mackenzie Crook (Ragetti) for the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.[6]
In the 2006 German The Curse of the Black Pearl novelization by Wolfgang and Rebecca Hohlbein, the butler was stabbed with a sword before he even fully opened the door.[8]
