- "Why would he do this to us? If Jack is the chief—"
"Aye, the Pelegostos have made Jack their chief. But he only remains chief as long as he acts like a chief." - ―Will Turner and Joshamee Gibbs on Jack Sparrow
A chief was a leader or head of a group of people.
History[]
- "You know, gentlemen, this is not the first time that I have found myself fancied by some wanton jungle chieftess."
- ―Jack Sparrow
Mutti served as the chief of the renegades of Windward Cove. People of Jamaica often spoke in hushed rumors of the Cove's terrible chief, who called up the very bones of her slain foes to serve as its guardians.[1] Jack Sparrow once told Mullroy and Murtogg that he was made chief.[2] During the search for the Dead Man's Chest, after being cursed with the Black Spot, Jack Sparrow fled to Isla de Pelegostos, where he became the chief of the Pelegostos Tribe, a title which the Pelegostos later gave to the Prison Dog following Sparrow's escape aboard the Black Pearl.[3][4] Jack also found himself fancied by a jungle chieftess on one occasion, and later claimed it was his gold-toothed smile that won him the lady's affections.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
- The term "chief" was first mentioned in the 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.[2] Chiefs would first appear in the junior novelization for the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.[3][4]
- The line, "And then they made me their chief..." as spoken by Jack Sparrow in The Curse of the Black Pearl is taken from the UK sketch show, The Fast Show, of which Johnny Depp is a fan. The line as spoken in the show, ends with "Which was nice."[citation needed] In Dead Man's Chest, Jack Sparrow was the chief of the Pelegostos Tribe,[4] which was meant to reference Sparrow's line in in The Curse of the Black Pearl.[2] However, whether Jack originally referred to the Pelegostos or some other tribe is unknown.
