"...if you're setting out on an expedition in search of that temple, I'll sail with you!"
"...for what reason?"
"I know the reason why you are going there...but I assure you, I don't need that. I just want to be there to see everything and maybe make an outstanding discovery!

―Clement asks Nathaniel to bring him to Khael Roa[src]

Clement Aurentius was a scientist and researcher who lived in a lighthouse on Oxbay island in the South Archipelago in the Caribbean sea in the 1630s. He took part in a voyage for treasure in the island of Khael Roa with the captains Nathaniel Hawk and Danielle Greene.

Biography[]

Clement was an elderly researcher and chemist who lived near Greenford colony on Oxbay in a lighthouse. One time, he was accused of sorcery when an experiment he was conducting resulted in a huge cloud of smoke which hovered over Greenford town. The man was tied to a stake to be burned by locals. But before they could do so, a woman whose child he once rescued using one of his potions implored Captain Nathaniel Hawk, who at that time had been in the town, to help free Clement, which he did by bribing off the executioners.

Thanking Nathaniel for saving his life, he invited the Captain to his lighthouse where he met with his partner Captain Danielle Greene and a man named Vincent Bethune. The three were in search for an explorer named Raoul Rheims for his knowledge of lost treasure in Khael Roa island.

Clement felt indebted to Nathaniel for his rescue, and offered him some inventions to be used on his ship. He also lent him his small dinghy when Nathaniel was once washed overboard his ship during a storm.

Nathaniel and Danielle sought out Clement's help as he had an extensive knowledge of the Inca language. However, their rival in the quest, Governor Robert Silehard, ordered his arrest to prevent them from contacting him. Nathaniel and Danielle were forced to lay siege on Greenford fort to free him.

After the battle, they requested him to help them translate ancient writings which gave instructions on how to reach the temple which contained the treasure. Clement demanded to be brought along with them in their voyage there out of his curiosity of the artifacts and treasures they may find.

During their sojourn into the temple, Clement warned of traps the natives designed to keep intruders away. A stubborn Danielle, impatient for the loot, approached a mysterious spherical device in the temple which triggered a volcanic tremor beneath the building, causing it to collapse. Chiding Danielle for her recklessness, Clement urged them to escape to the shore before the building would consume them.

The trio fled back to their ships where they encountered the cursed frigate Black Pearl, which they defeated with the help of the artifact Danielle took from the Temple.

Personality and traits[]

Clement Aurentius, scientist and researcher

Clement was a brilliant, if reclusive, alchemist and language expert whose brain was unparalleled in the archipelago. However, his stay in the Caribbean was motivated by his intellectual pursuits, not by promises of lost treasure or power, as did most pirates and merchants who sailed there.

Despite his vast knowledge of science and literature, Clement did not hold rapport with most other people. His occupation, deemed bizarre by the average citizen of his time and place, got him in trouble more than once - with a mob of paranoid villagers accusing him of sorcery, and later, with a power-hungry English governor whose lust for treasure put him and his vital knowledge of native dialects in his sights.

Left alone, Clement was a relatively well-meaning genius whose passion lay in studying the natural world instead of politics or entrepreneurship.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Clement never fights during the entirety of the game, and will not equip weapons if given by the player. This is because his Melee skill is set to 0. How he managed to pass the Khael Roa temple labyrinth, with its undead skeleton warriors, alone without any weapons, is a mystery.
    • He is, however, set to immortal, like Danielle.
