A compass is a navigational instrument that measures directions in a frame of reference that is stationary relative to the surface of the earth. It is used to point to the earth's magnetic poles so it will show what direction is north. It was first invented in the Han Dynasty and then spread across the world. CaptainJack Sparrow was known to have owned a mystical compass that could point whatever its user wanted most.
