"The history of the charts dates back to a time called the Dark Dynasty when the Emperor of an Asian land sent out four navigators to explore the world outside his kingdom and create a comprehensive map. The navigators left and returned 100 years later having not aged a month—the result of their labors was this infinitely complex map of other worlds."
―Unknown[src]

The Dark Dynasty was the term given to the time period many years before the Age of Piracy. Little is known of the dynasty, other than the period of time in which an ancient Chinese emperor sent out four navigators to explore the world outside his kingdom and create a comprehensive map. The navigators left and returned 100 years later having not aged a month—the result of their labors was an infinitely complex map of other worlds.[1][2]

Behind the scenes[]

The Dark Dynasty is first mentioned in the Certificate of Authenticity for Map of the Land of the Dead, a rare product for the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.[1] Both the dynasty and the map was further detailed in a version of the official Pirates of the Caribbean website circa 2010.[2]
