King George Augustus of Great Britain was also the duke of Brunswick-Luneburg.

"Her brother would probably make you a duke or something. You'd have pots of money and servants."
Robert Greene to Jack Sparrow[src]

Duke was the highest hereditary title of nobility that ranked directly below the monarch. The individual who held it resided over a duchy (or dukedom). The female equivalent was duchess.

History[]

During the golden age of piracy one of the inhabitants of Tortuga was known as the Red Duchess.[1] One of the slave traders who occasionally made business with Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company called himself "Duke" Wren-John.[2] When Captain Jack Sparrow and his First Mate Robert Greene, who both served as merchant seaman for the Company, discussed the possibility of Sparrow staying on the island of Kerma with Princess Amenirdis, Greene said her brother, Pharaoh Shabako, would probably make Jack a duke.[3] About 23 years into his reign, King George Augustus of Great Britain also served as the Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg, as he was introduced to Captain Jack Sparrow in St. James's Palace.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

In 2011, dukes were first mentioned in the novel Pirates of the Caribbean: The Price of Freedom by A. C. Crispin,[2] then made their first appearance in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.[4]

In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay draft for On Stranger Tides, Hector Barbossa would refer to King George Augustus as Duke of Luneburg while speaking to Lieutenant Commander Groves as he hears the mermaids of Whitecap Bay attack the HMS Providence.[5] Barbossa's line was omitted by the final cut of the film.[4]

In Terry Rossio's original 2012 screenplay draft for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, one of the main villains was Inez Luisa Gabriella di Savoia, Duchess of Burgundy and the Queen of Spain.[6]
