El Capitan Theatre, 2011.
El Capitan Theatre is a fully restored movie palace at 6838 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, owned and operated by the Walt Disney Company. It serves as the venue for many of the Walt Disney Studios' film premieres, and has presented showings of all of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. The theatre has also exhibited many set pieces, props and costumes used in the making of the Pirates films.
History[]
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest[]
In promotion of the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, props from the film was put on display in an exhibit at the El Capitan, notably love letters by Davy Jones and Calypso.[1][2]
Pirates Marathon 2007[]
On May 24, 2007, Disney's grand old El Capitan Theatre staged a Pirates of the Caribbean marathon, with the first two films ultimately leading up to a showing of the third installment, At World's End. During the 12 hour marathon, fans were treated to appearances from special guests from the Pirates franchise, prizes, giveaways, and the opportunity to meet and mingle with other fans. The special guests before each film's showing included:[3]
- Before The Curse of the Black Pearl - Martin Klebba (Marty), Vanessa Branch and Lauren Maher (Giselle and Scarlett)[citation needed]
- Before Dead Man's Chest - Jack Davenport (James Norrington)[citation needed]
- Before At World's End - Naomie Harris (Tia Dalma).[citation needed]
The El Capitan was also decorated for the showing of At World's End. The theatre also had an exclusive exhibit featuring authentic props and costumes from the film. Such props include Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann with "Chinese Pirate Princess" and "Pirate Lord King" costumes, Barbossa Pirate Lord, "Bootstap" Bill Turner, Captain Sao Feng Pirate Lord, Captain Teague's Instruments, the Dead Man's Chest, the Map, Pieces of Eight, and Pirata Codex book.[4][5]
Pirates Marathon 2011[]
On May 19, 2011, the El Capitan Theatre staged a second Pirates of the Caribbean marathon with the first three leading up to the screening of the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides. As previously, the all-day marathon had a few surprises along with appearances by Pirates crew and creative contributors before the screening of each film:
- Before The Curse of the Black Pearl - Chris Leps (Johnny Depp's Stuntman) and Greg Ellis (Lieutenant Theodore Groves)[6]
- Before Dead Man's Chest - Chopper (The Dog), Chiquita (Jack the Monkey), Martin Klebba (Marty)[7]
- Before At World's End - Lee Arenberg (Pintel)[8]
- Before On Stranger Tides - Vanessa Branch (Giselle) and Hans Zimmer (Composer).[9]
Other screenings[]
On May 25, 2017, there was a "Double Feature" event for The Curse of the Black Pearl and the then-upcoming film Dead Men Tell No Tales, which had a costume contest and guest stars Lee Arenberg, Martin Klebba, and composer Geoff Zanelli.[10][11]
On February 24, 2025, it was announced that tickets were available to "Behold the return of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise" by watching each Pirates of the Caribbean movie and explore the treasures of Captain Jack Sparrow at the theatre's archival display. The Curse of the Black Pearl played on March 5 with a fan event, Dead Man's Chest played on March 6, At World's End played on March 7, On Stranger Tides on March 8, and Dead Men Tell No Tales on March 9.[12][13][14][15][16] The theatre also hosted an exhibit, including Jack Sparrow's costume worn by Johnny Depp in Dead Men Tell No Tales, Will Turner's costume worn by Orlando Bloom in At World's End, Elizabeth Swann's costume worn by Keira Knightley and Captain Barbossa's costume worn by Geoffrey Rush in The Curse of the Black Pearl, along with other "treasures from the movies" including Bootstrap Bill Turner's costume by Stellan Skarsgård in Dead Man's Chest, Blackbeard's costume worn by Ian McShane in On Stranger Tides, the Bone Throne in Dead Man's Chest, the Brethren Court Globe and the Pirata Codex in At World's End.[17][18] Other props from Dead Man's Chest include the Dead Man's Chest, the Key, Davy Jones Pipe, Davy Jones' spyglass, and Tia Dalma silver heart locket.[19][20]
