"I remember as a kid watching the episode of 'The Wonderful World of Color' which introduced the 'Pirates' ride, and being totally blown away by it at the time. The opportunity to be involved with something that references this is, in my mind, a tribute to designers like Marc Davis and others who did such incredible work. It was such a pleasure to be able to do that."

Disneyland: From the Pirates of the Caribbean to the World of Tomorrow was an episode from The Wonderful World of Disney anthology television series. Directed by Hamilton S. Luske and hosted by Disneyland ambassador Maria Miner, it was broadcast on television on January 21, 1968. During the course of the show, the audience visited WED Enterprises to see how Disneyland attractions were created, including Pirates of the Caribbean and the new Tomorrowland.

A portion of the episode was included on the DVD release of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, titled Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color. Starting off with a clip from the Disneyland 10th Anniversary show that shows Walt Disney describing the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction when it was in the conception stage. The program then shows how Walt’s dream was realized by presenting footage of opening day for the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, as well as showing audiences going inside the ride itself.

Versions[]

The 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl paid homage to the attraction, as the first film in the movie franchise, and opened the Disney vault to present a portion of "Disneyland From Pirates Of The Caribbean To The World of Tomorrow" where Walt Disney previewed his then-upcoming attraction. It was included in the initial two-disc DVD release of The Curse of the Black Pearl. The archival TV program could be found under the "Pirates in the Parks" section of the second disc, under the name Walt Disney's Wonderful World Of Color.

Unlike the full episode, which covered the new Tomorrowland, this portion only covered the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Starting off with a clip from the Disneyland 10th Anniversary show that shows Walt Disney describing the Pirates of the Caribbean when it was in the conception stage. The program then shows how Walt's dream was realized by presenting footage of opening day for the attraction, as well as showing audiences going inside the ride itself.

Notable mentions[]

Production designer Rick Heinrichs mentioned the episode when talking about building the "Pantano River" bayou set, with Tia Dalma's shack as its centerpiece, set for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Filling up almost every inch of Stage 2 at Walt Disney Studios, this set was a truly magical evocation of a Caribbean swampland river, lined with stark, overhanging trees and brush and rickety lean-tos—a deliberate tip of the hat to the original Disneyland "Pirates of the Caribbean" attraction.[3][4]

The 2017 D23 Expo featured an exhibit A Pirate's Life for Me: Disney’s Rascals, Scoundrels, Really Bad Eggs. A description made about the special episode: Disneyland — from the Pirates of the Caribbean to the World of Tomorrow -- On January 21, 1968, Disneyland — from the Pirates of the Caribbean to the World of Tomorrow was broadcast on television. During the course of the show, audiences visited WED Enterprises to see how Imagineers created both the Pirates attraction and the upcoming "new" Tomorrowland. The show was directed by Hamilton S. Luske and hosted by Disneyland ambassador, Maria Miner.[5]
