- "The King and his men stole the Queen from her bed / And bound her in her bones."
- ―Lyrics from Hoist the Colours
This man was a pirate captain who became a Pirate Lord of the Brethren Court, most notably known as the original Pirate King of the First Brethren Court. It is unknown how he earned the title of Pirate King, due to the method in which the King was elected by a popular vote was written in a section of the Pirata Codex, which wasn't conceived until the Second Brethren Court. Nevertheless, it may be known that he had two of the three known qualities in order to become King: being captain of a ship and having killed a man.[2][3] During a time when the seas were untamed, the world a rougher place, and a sailor made his own fate, the Pirate Lords of the First Court met at Shipwreck Cove. They bound Calypso, the Goddess of the Sea, into human form, so that the rule of the seas would belong to men. They sealed her fate with Nine Pieces of Eight, which were passed down through the generations as each Pirate Lord names his or her successor to the Court. The King and the First Brethren Court binding Calypso would be the subject of Hoist the Colours, a song which served as the method of summoning the Court, most notably by the Fourth Brethren Court.[1][2]
Behind the scenes[]
The Pirate King of the First Brethren Court was first mentioned in the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.[1]
In the Rob Kidd book series Pirates of the Caribbean: Jack Sparrow, the infamous pirate captain Stone-Eyed Sam is called the pirate king of Isla Esquelética several times.[4][5] However, it was never explained if the pirate king and the Pirate King of the First Brethren Court are supposed to be the same person.
