Fortnite is a video game developed and published by Epic Games. It released in July 21, 2017. Fortnite has multiple game modes, using the same engine; each has similar graphics and art assets. Five of these modes are directly created and managed by Epic Games and its subsidiaries. Several of its updates have included Pirates of the Caribbean content, with the limited-time event Cursed Sails, which occurred in the Battle Royale mode between July 19 and August 6, 2024.
Early rumors and leaks[]
In early 2024, there were rumors hinting that Pirates of the Caribbean would be incorporated into a crossover with Fortnite, having previously featured Disney properties, such as Star Wars and Marvel, though Epic Games had not made any official statement.[4][5] In a tweet from reliable Fortnite leaker HYPEX, posted April 2024, Pirates of the Caribbean would be coming to the game in July.[6] According to another leak by HYPEX, a roadmap for Fortnite revealed a list which included "Pirates of the Caribbean Collab" as one addition to an update in the "Chapter 5, Season 3" crossover event.[7][8][9][10]
On June 22, 2024, the Fortnite v30.20 update patch arrived with the "Cursed Sails Pass" was momentarily available to purchase in the Item Shop for 1,000 V-Bucks and featured skins, such as Jack Sparrow. However, it was removed after the patch went live, but not before some players managed to buy it before it was removed from the Item Shop.[11][12][13][14] It was revealed to be an error made by Epic Games ahead of its intended release on July 19.[15] further confirmed by later social media posts.[16][17]

Cast off with the ghostly Ship in a Bottle, explore Shipwreck Shallows, and hunt for buried treasure. Cursed Sails runs until August 6, 2024, at 4 AM ET!"

Chapter 5: Season 3 began on May 24, 2024 and concluded on August 15, 2024. The season's Pirates of the Caribbean content notably included the "Cursed Sails" limited-time event and collaboration, which ran from July 19 through August 6, 2024. The event was first announced as the first Pirates of the Caribbean cosmetics were released in the form of skins for Jack Sparrow, Cursed Jack Sparrow, Captain Barbossa, Davy Jones, and Elizabeth Swann featured as additions to the Item Shop.[13][14] Players could complete "Cursed Sails" Quests to unlock cosmetic and in-game rewards.[2] On July 20, 2024, the official Facebook page for Fortnite shared some tips, including "Adopt a Parrot (Or a Kraken)", "Obey the Pirates' Code at all costs", and "Befriend someone with a Peg Leg" for their "Cursed Sails" pass.[18]
Continuity[]
In the original story for the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, created by Walt Disney Studios executives Brigham Taylor, Michael Haynes, and Josh Harmon as a rough treatment, a prison guard named Will sets out to rescue Elizabeth, who was kidnapped for ransom by the notorious pirate named Blackheart and his bloody crew, as well as the Captain of the Guard named Defoe, who is secretly in league with Blackheart. Over time, as the original treatment was developed into several screenplay drafts, Blackheart became Captain Hector Barbossa, originally portrayed by Geoffrey Rush.[19][20] However, in Fortnite, the character Blackheart is separate from the Captain Barbossa.[21]
One of the items featured in Fortnite is "Jack's Cutlass and Bane" with the in-game description: "One was a gift and the other is destined to get rid of Jack."[21] While unconfirmed, this is most likely a reference to Jack Sparrow's cutlass, which was a gift to Jack offered as tribute in the final version of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,[22] and Jack Sparrow's bane, the sword destined to kill Jack in Terry Rossio's unproduced screenplay for Dead Men Tell No Tales.[23]
