- "What ports of call on your voyage to China, Mister de Ver?"
"Marseilles, mon capitan. Where the best ships, the ships built by Frenchmen, they are docking! Also, Lisbon, Gibraltar, Algol here in Afrique, then around the Cape of Good Hope to Shanghai." - ―Jack Sparrow and Etienne de Ver
Gibraltar was a British overseas territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula near the exit of the Mediterranean Sea into the Atlantic Ocean. It was bordered to the north by Spain. It switched control over the years, and by the 1700s, Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain, and it was ceded to Great Britain in perpetuity. It became an important base for the British Royal Navy and the East India Trading Company.
History[]
At some point prior to the early 18th century, the East India Trading Company established a presence in Gibraltar, setting an office.
After a few months of exemplary service at the EITC office in London, England, the young EITC operative Cutler Beckett was assigned to a tour of duty at the EITC office on Gibraltar. Beckett boarded the merchant vessel the Lindesfarne in London and sailed for Gibraltar, but the pirate ship, Le Requin, attacked and captured the Lindesfarne off the coast of Spain. The pirate captain Christophe-Julien de Rapièr and his crew kept Beckett imprisoned for weeks until the EITC sent the ransom money, and when the boy reached Gibraltar, the first thing he did was to write a letter to his liberator, the EITC official Lord Penwallow, thanking him for the Company's faith in him, promising to pay back the ransom amount.
The merchant ship the Molly Dover made a stop in Gibraltar on her voyage from England to China. Approximately one year later, the merchant ship the Wicked Wench took on fresh water in Gibraltar on her voyage from Liverpool to Calabar.
