Green Flash was the term given to rare optical phenomena that occur shortly after sunset or before sunrise, when a green spot is visible for a short period of time above the sun, or a green ray shoots up from the sunset point. According to Pirate Lore, it was a flash that shoots up into the sky at the last glimpse of sunset, signaling the return of a soul from the world of the dead, or trying to get back from Davy Jones' Locker.

History

Will Turner and Joshamee Gibbs[src]

According to Pirate Lore, it was believed that the green flash signified the return of a soul from the Land of the Dead. It happened at the last glimpse of sunset shooting into the sky. Some individuals went through their whole lives and never seen it, while some claim to have seen it, but have not.[1] The green flash appeared when Davy Jones raised the Wicked Wench from the sea bottom, along with her captain, Jack Sparrow.[2] Thirteen years later, upon finding the right passage on the Map to the Land Beyond Death, the green flash happened when the Black Pearl, her crew and her two captains, Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa, were trying to get back from Davy Jones' Locker.[3][1]

Following Will Turner becoming the new captain of the Flying Dutchman, the green flash occurred two known times. It first accompanied the departure of Will Turner and the Dutchman to the Land of the Dead, though the flash was for several of the now-free crew members of the Dutchman that decided to stay behind in the world of the living.[4] Ten years later, it signaled Will's return to this dimension.[3]
