"Green flash" is the term given to rare optical phenomena that occur shortly after sunset or before sunrise, when a green spot is visible for a short period of time above the sun, or a green ray shoots up from the sunset point.

It was thought that the green flash signified the return of a soul from the land of the dead. It was seen by the crew of the Black Pearl in the last moment of their escape from Davy Jones' Locker, signalling the return of Jack Sparrow. The green flash accompanied the Flying Dutchman's departure from this world to the Land of the Dead. And it later signaled the Dutchman's return to this dimension, under the command of Captain William Turner.
