- "The King's men kidnapped a whole group of us near Romney Marsh back home. They marched us off and forced us to work on this rotten scow!"
- ―Dimity Mipps to Jack Sparrow
The HMS Achilles was a warship of the British Royal Navy under the command of Captain Oliver Randolph Pynce-Jones III. Following an encounter with the legendary pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, a masked man only known as "The Scarecrow" attacked the Achilles, and defeated the British Navy.
History[]
The HMS Achilles was a warship of the British Royal Navy with three-masts and sails. When the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow sailed into Smuggler's Notch, a narrow inlet that had long been a safe haven for buccaneers and other Caribbean pirates, he found himself facing the British Navy warship. Sparrow had been captured by Pynce-Jones, who had been assigned by His Majesty "the King himself" to eliminate all pirates in those waters, and held their prisoner chain to the mast and ordered the helmsman of the Achilles to set sail for Port Royal. Minutes later, Jack Sparrow encountered Dimity Mipps, an old acquaintance and scoundrel now serving His Majesty's Navy after the King's men kidnapped a whole group of men near Romney Marsh, including Dimity Mipps, marched them off and forced them to work as sailors on the ship. Shortly after Pynce-Jones caught Mipps speaking to Sparrow, and had the two prisoners tied to the mast, and Pynce-Jones threatened to make an example of Mipps. However, before he could punish the man, hideous laughter rang out across the ship, and saw a frightening figure—known only as "The Scarecrow"—riding on a horse on the cliff-top above them. Landing on the Achilles, the masked man drew his pistol on the Captain and called himself the "Spirit of the Marsh" as he attacked the British crew. The Scarecrow freed Mipps, who then freed Sparrow, who mis-stepped and tumbled into the lower gun deck while the Scarecrow fought off Pynce-Jones's men. Sparrow was saved from pursuit by the Scarecrow, who gave him the honor of lighting a cannon pointed directly at the main deck. Jack fired the cannon, sinking the Achilles with one shot before he, the Scarecrow, and those of the crew whom the figure had rescued, escaped to land. Pynce-Jones was determined to go down with his ship, though the inlet was shallow enough to forestall a watery grave for the Captain. At the entrance to Smuggler's Notch, the Scarecrow bade Jack farewell, stating his duty was to the people of Romney Marsh when Jack asked him to join his crew.
