"Dead men tell no tales! So, I'm forced to let ye live."
This article covers content from an electronic game which is part of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and yet may also contain some inconsistencies and contradictions to established canon.
This article is about the English ship. You may be looking for the French ship of the same name.

"A frigate came from Glasgow to Redmond recently. It was supposed to be the new flagship for the Redmond fleet....when the French captured Oxbay, the captain of the frigate received a secret order direct from Governor Silehard. The following day, the frigate put out to sea, and the governor ended up having to commandeer civilian ships to fend off the French fleet!"
―Ewan Glover to Nathaniel Hawk[src]

The Belette was an enormous man-of-war and the flagship of the English Royal Navy in the South Caribbean in the 1630's.

History[]

The Belette was once among the King of England's personal ships and was sent to the Caribbean from Glasgow to enforce English supremacy in the archipelago. Upon reaching the colonies in 1630, the ship's captain allegedly received a secret order from Redmond governor Sir Robert Silehard, and she sailed to an unknown direction, never being sighted since.

Governor Silehard obtained the man-of-war for his personal use in his quest to hunt for treasure in Khael Roa. On his venture, he was escorted by three pirate ships headed by Isenbrandt Jurcksen, his accomplice in the quest. Before they could drop anchor on the island, however, a fleet led by rogue captain Nathaniel Hawk intercepted them, and an fierce engagement broke out. The Belette inflicted heavy losses to Nathaniel's fleet, but was eventually sunk or captured in the battle.

She was the only known ship of her class in the archipelago at the time.

Design and appearance[]

This man-of-war was the most powerful warship in the archipelago in terms of firepower, armed to the teeth with one hundred 24-pounder culverines. She was also the most durable next to the Black Pearl, whose hull was strengthened through supernatural means. Her only drawback was her low speed and maneuverability, rendering her unable to chase and board smaller, faster vessels. However, she more than makes up for it through superior firepower and a nearly impervious hull.

Although called a manowar, she seems to resemble a first-rate ship of the line.

Behind the scenes[]

The Belette battling the Black Pearl.

  • The Belette is the only manowar encountered in the game, and shows up by the bay of Khael Roa near the end of the main quest.
  • If captured, the Belette can be used against the Black Pearl in the last mission of the game. If the player has high Cannons and Accuracy skills, he can use this ship to single-handedly sink the Pearl without using the Incan artifact.
  • The manowar's size is greatly exaggerated compared to its historical counterparts - for example, the HMS Victory, one of the largest warships during the Age of Sail, was only 69 meters in length, compared to the manowar's 96 meters.
