The HMS Bounty was an enlarged reconstruction of the original 1787 British Royal Navy ship of the same name, built by Smith and Ruhland in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, in 1960. The tall sailing ship was often referred to as HMS Bounty, but was not entitled to the use of the prefix "HMS" as she was not commissioned into the Royal Navy. Here "HMS" is treated as part of the popular name, and not as a ship prefix. Since it was originally built specifically for filming the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty, it was constructed with unusually large rooms. The HMS Bounty portrayed the Edinburgh Trader in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. On October 29, 2012, the HMS Bounty sank off the coast of North Carolina during Hurricane Sandy.
History[]
The HMS Bounty was launched on August 27, 1960. Crewed by Lunenburg fishermen and film staff, the vessel sailed via the Panama Canal to Tahiti for filming the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty. Bounty was scheduled to be burned at the end of filming, but actor Marlon Brando protested, so MGM kept the vessel. After filming and a worldwide promotional tour, the ship was berthed in St. Petersburg, Florida, as a permanent tourist attraction, where she stayed until the mid-1980s. It also appeared in several other films, including the 1983 film Yellowbeard, the 1990 film adaptation of Treasure Island, the 2004 film The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and the 2005 film Pirates.
When not used for filming, the Bounty was open to the public. Tours were conducted at Tall Ship shows and people could sail with the ship for a fee. The Bounty also recreated the voyage of the original ship.
The Bounty was crewed by a combination of volunteers and paid crew men. While no experience was necessary to join the volunteer crew, they required some time spent working on restoration or dockside maintenance.
For Pirates of the Caribbean, the Bounty portrayed the Edinburgh Trader in the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
In 2007, the ship was repainted black and toured the United Kingdom as the Black Pearl, the ship of Captain Jack Sparrow, despite the fact that the Black Pearl was portrayed by the Sunset, another completely different vessel. The fraud was exposed by the 12 year old Pirates fan Ross Winstanley.[2]
On October 29, 2012, the Bounty sank off the coast of North Carolina during Hurricane Sandy. The crew was forced to abandon ship, and at least one crewmember was killed.[1]
