- "I offer you a choice. Join my crew...and postpone the judgment. One hundred years before the mast. Will ye serve?"
"I will serve."
- ―Davy Jones and the helmsman
At some point in his life, this man became a merchant sailor on an unknown ship, serving as a helmsman under an unknown captain. He was in service aboard this vessel when the Kraken suddenly attacked it, killing over three quarters of the crew and splitting the entire ship in half. This man barely managed to survive this attack, but still had visible injuries such as a bloody forehead. Left paralysed from the terrifying experience, he hid, shivering.
The helmsman was one of the few survivors of the Kraken's attack on the scuttled ship. When Will Turner came aboard the wreckage, the helmsman was seen hiding behind the ship's rigging, frightened of what he endured. When the crewmen of Flying Dutchman arrived, they captured all of the survivors. When Davy Jones offered the crew service aboard the Dutchman, particularly the helmsman, the ship's chaplain encouraged them to refuse. After Jones had the latter killed, he resumed offering the helmsman the choice of joining his crew. The helmsman, as well as the other crewmembers, joined his crew.
