"My Lyfe Amonge the Pyrates, by Capt. J. Ward. Teague gave me his copy to read when I was just a lad. In one of the chapters Captain Ward regales the reader with tales of treasures from all the pirates he encountered. Some of the legends go way back, hundreds, even a thousand or more years."
Jack Sparrow[src]

The infamous J. Ward was a captain from the late 17th century. The captain apparently had many exciting adventures which he wrote down in his book, My Lyfe Amonge the Pyrates. The book was a favorite among Jack Sparrow and Cutler Beckett. Jack Sparrow speculated that J. Ward might have been a pirate and used J. Ward as a pseudonym to protect his identity.
