"Which port? I didn't say 'port', I said 'land'. Any land." - ―Joshamee Gibbs and Jack Sparrow
Land, also known as dry land, ground, or earth, is the solid terrestrial surface not submerged by the ocean or another body of water. It makes up 29.2% of Earth's surface and includes all continents and islands. Almost entirely covered by a layer of rock, soil, and minerals, land is covered in trees or in permanent snow and glaciers. Land terrain varies greatly and consists of mountains, deserts, plains, plateaus, glaciers, and other landforms. Even though saturated land, or mud, is common away from the ocean, the shoreline is referred to as where dry land begins for anyone in a body of water.
Though modern terrestrial plants and animals evolved from aquatic creatures, Earth's earliest known life forms likely originated on land. Survival on land depends on fresh water from rivers, streams, lakes, and glaciers, which constitute only three percent of the water on Earth. The vast majority of human activity throughout history has occurred in land areas that are habitable and support agriculture and various natural resources.
The word land derived from the English word land, meaning "ground, soil", and "definite portion of the earth's surface, home region of a person or a people, territory marked by political boundaries". The original meaning can also be associated with "country". A country or nation may be referred to as the homeland of its people. Many countries and other places have names incorporating the suffix "-land" (e.g. England and Ireland). The study of land and its history in general is called geography.
It is a well-known fact that there are supernatural beings who cannot step on land, including Davy Jones[1] and Armando Salazar.[2]
