Light & Magic is a documentary series directed by Lawrence Kasdan and produced by Lucasfilm. It explores the early days and the history of the visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic from its founding in 1975 to its key role in the development of visual effects in filmmaking. The first six episodes began streaming on Disney+ on July 27, 2022.[4]

Development[]
In 2022, Light & Magic was first revealed at a panel at Celebration Anaheim that included executive producer Ron Howard, Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett, Joe Johnston, Rose Duignan, and Lucasfilm vice president and general manager Lynwen Brennan. The six-episode documentary series explores the early days of Industrial Light & Magic. Clips from the series were shown at the panel.[1] All episodes will be streaming on Disney+ on July 27, 2022.[4] Director Lawrence Kasdan was granted unparalleled access,[7] and he interviewed special effects veterans. Many of the moments discussed by the panelists are depicted in real-time behind-the-scenes footage.[1]
An official trailer was released on the ILM YouTube channel on July 7, 2022.[8] An official poster was also released on StarWars.com on the same day.[5] The series was made by Lucasfilm and Imagine Documentaries.[7] Season 1 was released on July 27.[1]
The score to the show was written by James Newton Howard, with assistance from Steve Durkee, Michael Dean Parsons, Tobin Pugash, and Xander Rodzinski.[9] An OST album was released on August 26, 2022 on most digital music platforms.[10]
On October 24, 2023, Joe Johnston confirmed a second season of Light & Magic was in development.[11] In addition to interviewing George Lucas, Johnston chose director Gore Verbinski as one of Light & Magic Season 2's other filmmaker interview subjects.[6] It released on April 18, 2025 and comprised of three episodes.[3]
