Marcus was a former slave turned pirate. Following a slave insurrection on a tobacco plantation in New Orleans, Marcus joined a crew of escaped slaves in stealing Gentleman Jocard's ship, the Ranger, in search of Gombo. Believing he would be a better leader for them, Marcus asked Gombo if he would be their captain. Gombo accepted the offer, taking the name of their former master as his own, and making Marcus his first mate. In a few months, Marcus sailed with Captain and Gentleman Jocard, who became one of the most prosperous and respected pirates as well as the Pirate Lord of the Atlantic Ocean. Later Marcus helped distract King Samuel's men by steering a trick ship into the bay and setting it on fire. Afterwards he jumped off the ship without King Samuel's men seeing him and swam back to shore while the others broke into King Samuel's palace without being spotted.
