- "Wildcats! I bid 200 for the pair!"
"Two-twenty-five!"
"Offering them as a lot!" - ―The Marquis D'Avis, a pirate and the Auctioneer
The Marquis D'Avis was a pirate and marquis who operated in the Caribbean, known to be one of the richest pirates in Shipwreck City.
Biography[]
- "As owner of the property disposed, in fact I can."
"No one owns me."
"We're not property."
"Are they for sale or not?" - ―Auctioneer, Scarlett, Giselle, and the Marquis D'Avis
Not much is known of D'Avis's life, other than that he became a rich pirate, a marquis, and began living in Shipwreck City at some point in the 1720s. The Marquis D'Avis was among the pirates present at an auction for two wenches, Scarlett and Giselle, led by the Auctioneer. Although the Marquis D'Avis initially bid for only Scarlett, whom the pirates would refer to as the "redhead" in a cacophony clamor of offers, he eventually bid for the pair until he won the auction with either seven hundred pieces of silver and two goats or alternatively seven hundred and two goats.[1][6][7]
There was soon an argument, where the Marquis D'Avis asked whether the wenches were for sale or not, in which the Auctioneer quoted what was in the hallowed Pirate Code book, seconded by Mungard. A quick series of dominoes fell after Giselle slapped Mungard, who threatened any who held the key to the wenches, including the Marquis D'Avis, who claimed "buyer's remorse" to Auctioneer. The commotion led to Mungard firing his pistol, shooting the Auctioneer, who held up the Code book and tumbled back. All the pirates, including the Marquis D'Avis, stared in shock. Stepping up warily, dreading, the terrified pirates looked down toward the Auctioneer's body at the Code book, now with a bullet in it, with hushed murmurs of how Mungard shot the Code. The Marquis D'Avis was present when Mungard ordered the Code to be locked up and warned the pirates that if any of them spoke a word of what happened, that he would have their tongues.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The Marquis D'Avis, the Rich Pirate was portrayed by Walter Williamson in Tales of the Code: Wedlocked.[1]
- In Terry Rossio's screenplay draft for Wedlocked, under the proposed title Tales of the Code: Pirate Belles, the character didn't have a name and would only be identified as the "Rich Pirate".[3]
- The exact spelling of the character's name varied depending on the source, and is therefore unknown. In the French language, the "d'" particle before one's noble name, and so "d'Avis" could be the correct spelling. However, the name was presented in all capitals, as presented with all names in the ending credits for Wedlocked.[1] Director James Ward Byrkit once wrote as "Marquis D'Avis" in at least one response to a fan question.[4] The name was spelled "Marquis D'avis" in the D23 website.[5]
- Like Atencio and Slurry Gibson, "Marquis D'avis" is named after Marc Davis, one of Walt Disney's Imagineers who worked on the original Disneyland attraction Pirates of the Caribbean.[5]
- The final bid for Scarlett and Giselle by the Rich Pirate was supposed to be 700 pieces of silver and two goats; one girl loved the money, one loved the idea they just got goats. But the way Walter Williamson delivered the line suggests he bidded 702 goats. When the film crew realized the confusion during the read, they decided to keep it just for the confusion.[6][7]
