"What ports of call on your voyage to China, Mister de Ver?"
"Marseilles, mon capitan. Where the best ships, the ships built by Frenchmen, they are docking!
"
Jack Sparrow and Etienne de Ver[src]

Marseille or Marseilles was a port city in southern France. Situated in the Provence region, it was located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, near the mouth of the Rhône river. Founded by Greek settlers, Marseille was the oldest city in France, as well as one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited settlements. Marseille had been a trading port since ancient times, and in particular, it experienced a considerable commercial boom during the colonial period, becoming a prosperous industrial and trading city.

History[]

"What I want is simple. I want to find Ammand the Corsair and my ship, the Pearl, which was despicably stolen from me back in Marseille."
Jack Sparrow[src]

During the Age of Piracy, the city was the trade capital of France and served as a home port to French pirate Capitaine Chevalle, the Pirate Lord of the Mediterranean Sea,[1] and the crew of the Fancy.[2] The merchant vessel Molly Dover made port in Marseilles on her voyage to China.[3] Jack Sparrow visited the city at least once, and during that time he was locked in the local prison, though not for long, because there wasn't a prison in the world could hold Jack Sparrow.[2] During Jack's service in the East India Trading Company, following the seemingly failed quest for Kerma, Jack told his superior Cutler Beckett that he once sailed away from Marseilles without paying his bill to his old fencing master, and when the man passed away, still angry at Jack, his ghost began haunting his former student.[4] When the Shadow Lord attempted to destroy the Pirate Lords of the Brethren Court, he commandeered the Centurion and sailed the ship to Marseilles.[5] When the pirate ship the Black Pearl arrived there later, the crew was ambushed and captured by a joint force of Spanish Navy soldiers and the EITC agents.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

Marseille was first pictured and named "Marseilles" in the "Inside the Brethren Court" bonus feature for the DVD/Bluray releases for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.[1] After making its first appearance in Legends of the Brethren Court: Wild Waters,[5] it was identified as "Marseille" in Day of the Shadow.[7]
