Netflix, Inc. (known simply as Netflix) is an American provider of on-demand televised and cinematic content. Founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in Scotts Valley, California, Netflix initially both sold and rented DVDs by mail, but by 2007, Netflix introduced streaming media through a subscription video on-demand service, which showcases acquired and original programming as well as third-party content licensed from other distributors. From 2011 to 2018, Netflix's "Watch Instantly" service held first-run rights to films from Disney. Netflix also provided back-catalog TV programs distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television before 2019. In January 2019, Netflix became the first streaming and tech company to join the Motion Picture Association of America, officially becoming a film studio.[2][3]

History[]

Relationship with Disney[]

On December 4, 2012, Netflix and The Walt Disney Company announced an exclusive multi-year agreement for first-run United States subscription television rights to Walt Disney Studios' animated and live-action films, with classics such as Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland and Pocahontas available immediately and others available on Netflix beginning in 2016.[4] Direct-to-video releases were made available in 2013.[5][6] Disney later entered into other content agreements with Netflix, including a slate of four television series by Marvel Television and ABC Studios and acquiring its animated Star Wars series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and a new sixth season. Starting in 2016 and ending in 2020, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales appeared on the service for a time, while all five movies were available for DVD rentals. Dead Men Tell No Tales was notably made available on Netflix on January 2018.[7]

However, the agreement with Disney ended in 2019 due to the launch of Disney+, having first been announced in late 2017,[8] with a majority of Disney-related productions moving exclusively to the service in 2022.[9][10] On April 2019, details were revealed about a contract made between Disney and Netflix for movies released between 2016 and 2018, in which all movies released over those three years would come to Netflix in the United States around 6 to 8 months after their cinema release, then stay on Netflix for approximately 18 months, before being removed from Netflix. Movies made before 2016 won't come under this deal and all movies released in 2019 also aren't affected.[11] While Dead Men Tell No Tales remained on Netflix as per the aforementioned contract with Disney, Disney+ launched on November 12, 2019, with the first four Pirates of the Caribbean films added.[12]
