Nippon, also known as Japan, was an island country in East Asia, located in the Pacific Ocean off the northeast coast of the Asian mainland and archipelago. The archipelago consisted of four major islands and thousands of smaller islands. About three-quarters of the country's terrain was mountainous and heavily forested, concentrating its agriculture and population along its eastern coastal plains. By the 1600s, Edo became the de facto capital of Nippon and grew to become one of the largest cities in the world. Japanese culture was well known around the world, including its art and cuisine.

Little is known of the history of Nippon and Japan, other than their temples and feats of engineering at some point prior to young Jack Sparrow's teenage adventures. Mistress Ching, the Pirate Lord of the Pacific Ocean, controlled the pirate confederation in China since her husband's death and became a profiteer of smuggled trade goods between Japan and China. The East India Trading Company also established an office at the port of Edo in Nippon, where Cutler Beckett worked for three years before he was moved to Calabar.

• Japan was first identified by name through the official website for the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and first mentioned in the 2007 book Jack Sparrow: Dance of the Hours by Rob Kidd. It was first identified as "Nippon" in the 2011 novel The Price of Freedom by A. C. Crispin.
• Japan, formerly Nippon, would be home of Tokyo, formerly Edo, and Tokyo Disney Resort.
• Michael A. Levine (Tortuga pirate band) and Yuki Matsuzaki (Garheng) were born in Japan.
