"When we finally meet the French in battle, the less gunpowder they have, the better."
"You want me to sink the barque?"
"I'll leave the method up to you, captain. Board it, sink it... that's your decision. The main thing is to keep the French from getting that ammunition.

Governor Robert Silehard tasks Nathaniel Hawk to intercept the Oiseau[src]

Oiseau was a French military barque that was to deliver ammunition to the French squadron occupying Oxbay from Falaise de Fleur in 1630. The Oiseau was captained by Virgile Boon.

History[]

The English Captain Nathaniel Hawk was tasked by Redmond Governor Robert Silehard to prevent the ship from delivering the cargo by attacking it before it could reach its destination. Nathaniel contacted Captain Amiel Berangere, whose brig Le Requin was assigned to the Oiseau as an escort, and bribed him out of his underpaid job.

Pretending to be Captain Boon's escort, Nathaniel ambushed the Oiseau at sea after leaving Falaise de Fleur, sinking or capturing her. He was then rewarded generously by Silehard for his success.

Design and appearance[]

The Oiseau was a small cargo ship, lightly-armed and slower but with more cargo capacity and crewmen than Nathaniel's lugger Victory. This necessitated an escort from a more powerful ship, such as Captain Berangere's brig, for such an important mission as carrying ammunitions to a squadron of warships on another island.

Gameplay[]

The Oiseau is the first ship the player will be required to defeat in the game. There are several ways to do this. The most common method is to attack it on sea - on the World Map, sail out of Falaise de Fleur to the open sea and press the Spacebar to engage it in combat. Use a fast ship such as the Victory to board her as this means you can sell her for gold, but be prepared to have a decent Melee skill and at least Basic Defense since you'll be fighting on deck.

Another method, and the easiest, is to simply sail straight into Redmond fort first on the World Map before pressing the Spacebar. This will trigger the fort to fire on the barque, sinking it instantly, However, you won't get any experience or gold from this as you aren't the one who sunk it.

The fastest way is to simply attack and kill Virgile Boon, as this will trigger the sinking of the ship automatically. However, this causes the French fort to fire at you when you leave the port, so instantly press "Sail To" and press Oyster Beach before the cannons strike your ship. Alternatively, you can land first on Oyster Beach before going to Virgile Boon so that you can avoid the fort when you leave the island. But you will have to fight the guards to get through town and into the jungle to get to your ship in the beach should you decide to do this.

Behind the scenes[]

  • If the player kills Virgile Boon on land, the Oiseau is automatically sunk as well, completing the mission instantly. However, this triggers the Falaise de Fleur fort to fire on Nathaniel's ship when he leaves port.
  • When the Oiseau is boarded, the player must fight English, not French, soldiers. This may have been a mistake during development.
  • The word "oiseau" in French means bird.
