"On Stranger Tides" is a musical theme composed by Hans Zimmer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It appears as track ten on the film's official soundtrack.

Track description[]

On Stranger Tides Sample

The "On Stranger Tides" theme.

The theme as heard in "On Stranger Tides".

The Spanish theme as heard in "On Stranger Tides".

The track opens with the theme playing on strings, with an eerie ambience in the background. After a brief section of filler music, the "Spanish theme" is stated for the first time. The track finished with a shorter version of the On Stranger Tides theme, accompanied by a wavering two note figure previsouly heard in "Mermaids" (which also uses the On Stranger Tides theme).

In the film[]

The track plays during the opening of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, from the Walt Disney Pictures logo to the prologue, with the Spanish's discovery of the ancient sailor, and to the main titles.

Trivia[]

  • This track is known as "Opening" from the alternative track listing of the extended score.
  • The demo version of this piece includes more material from the discovery of the Spanish Castaway on the fishing boat. It also uses synthesisers for the "On Stranger Tides" theme.
  • Although this is the first track heard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, it is the penultimate track on the album.
  • The "On Stranger Tides" theme has been mistakenly believed to double as the mermaid theme. While "On Stranger Tides" can be heard in "Mermaids", their main theme is actually an excerpt from "At Wit's End" (although the two are similarly constructed to begin with).
