- "Coming up on Panama, Captain Jack Sparrow."
"Sure we are, mate. What's your problem with Panama? Lovely country. Excellent rum."
"Not my problem. His. The Shadow Lord's. Hates Panama. Did terrible things here. Old grudges. But new victims." - ―Alex and Jack Sparrow
Panama was a colony of Portugal in Central America.
History[]
- "They say Henri Morgan robbed a Spanish monastery of a gold cross and a chalice. The monastery was located somewhere on the coast of Panama."
- ―Christophe-Julien de Rapièr to Jack Sparrow
In 1671, the notorious English privateer Henry Morgan sacked Panama City, which yielded untold treasures of gold, silver, and jewels.[2][3] When Morgan became the "Shadow Lord" in a quest to eliminate the Pirate Lords of the Brethren Court, he sent a Shadow Army to wreak havoc and destruction on a city in Panama.[4] Shortly after the attack, the agents of the East India Trading Company examined the ruins and sent their report to Lord Benedict Huntington, the EITC Manager of Hong Kong.[5]
At some point prior to Jack Sparrow's teenage adventures, the pirate captain named Stone-Eyed Sam was known as the scourge of Panama.[6] Panama was the location of Fort Alvo Grande, where Jack Sparrow and Will Turner raided in an attempt to discover the Skull Of Teoxuacata. They were captured by the Portuguese Army, but eventually escaped the Chaves Brothers with the help of Elizabeth Swann.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- Panama was first mentioned in the 1974 book Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Story of the Robust Adventure in Disneyland and Walt Disney World.[2] The 2006 video game Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow featured the first appearance of Panama, identified by name only through the game's map.[1] Panama was also identified in Rob Kidd's books, mentioned in Jack Sparrow: The Coming Storm[6] and appeared in Legends of the Brethren Court: The Caribbean.[4]
