This small boat was a rowboat most notably used by Pintel and Ragetti following their escape from the prison at Port Royal.
History[]
Not much is known about the history of this boat prior to its commandeering by the pirates Pintel and Ragetti. Its owner, an unnamed sailor, had just docked in Port Royal, trying to tie the mooring lines, when the two runaway prisoners raced down the hill in a cart, escaping from Fort Charles. The cart collided with a cannon on the dock, sending the pirates and the Prison Dog flying through the air—straight into the longboat. Though the boat's owner yelled after them, the pirates quickly rowed away.[1]
At some point during the journey Pintel and Ragetti landed on a desert island to take some rest. When Pintel started digging with a shovel, hoping to find some buried treasure, the whole island started shaking and sinking, forcing the pirate duo and the dog to return to the boat. As Pintel slowly rowed, Ragetti saw behind them that the island was actually a giant sea serpent.[4] Later, Pintel and Ragetti found some wild islands where they attempted to plunder the pearls collected by the natives. However, the local tribe forced them to retreat empty handed.[5]
The pirates eventually reached Isla de Pelegostos where they found their old ship, the Black Pearl, careened on the beach. The dog jumped off the boat into the water and started swimming for the beach. Shortly afterwards, as Pintel and Ragetti's boat got closer to shore, a large wave suddenly came from behind and hit the boat, sending the two pirates into the water, tumbling to shore.[2][3]
Behind the scenes[]
- The rowboat first appeared in the 2006 junior novelization for the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.[2][3]
- Unlike the final cut of Dead Man's Chest,[3] Pintel and Ragetti's boat does not capsize when it reaches Cannibal Island in the film's novelization.[2]
- A slightly altered scene of the Pintel and Ragetti's boat capsizing was used in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, notably when the crew of the Black Pearl land on the Black Sand Beach.[6]
