"Hey, come back with my boat!"
"Woof!"
"Boat?"
"Boat!
"
―Unnamed sailor, Prison Dog, Pintel and Ragetti[src]

This small boat was a rowboat most notably used by Pintel, Ragetti, and the Prison Dog following the prisoner escape from the jail at Port Royal.

History[]

Not much is known about the history of this rowboat, other than it was owned by an unnamed sailor who had docked in Port Royal around the time of the escape of Pintel and Ragetti, two pirates who were prisoners in the jail at Fort Charles. The sailor was trying to tie the mooring lines, when the two runaway prisoners and the Prison Dog raced down the hill in a cart, escaping from Fort Charles. The cart collided with a cannon on the dock, sending the pirates and the dog flying through the air—straight into the boat. Though the boat's owner yelled after them, the pirates quickly rowed away.[1]

At some point during the journey across the Caribbean Sea, Pintel and Ragetti landed the boat on a desert island to take some rest. When Pintel started digging with a shovel, hoping to find some buried treasure, the whole island started shaking and sinking, forcing the pirate duo and the dog to return to the boat. As Pintel slowly rowed, Ragetti saw behind them that the island was actually a giant sea serpent.[4] Later, Pintel and Ragetti found some wild islands where they attempted to plunder the pearls collected by the natives. However, the local tribe forced them to retreat empty handed.[5]

Pintel and Ragetti continued rowing until eventually, as they debated over divine providence and the Bible, they found their old ship, the Black Pearl, careened on the beach of Isla de Pelegostos. The dog jumped off the boat into the water and started swimming for the beach. Shortly afterwards, as Pintel and Ragetti's boat got closer to shore, a large wave suddenly came from behind and hit the boat, sending the two pirates into the water, tumbling to shore.[2][3]

Behind the scenes[]

Pintel and Ragetti's longboat, only identified as a "boat" in all its appearances, first appeared in Irene Trimble's junior novelization‎ for the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.[2][3] In addition to Dead Man's Chest, the boat was featured in "The Sleeping Island!" comic published in Disney Adventures.[4] In 2007, the boat appeared in "Pearly Gaze!" in Disney Adventures[5] and "The Escape of Pintel and Ragetti!" in the Secrets of the Deep collection.[1]

In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay for Dead Man's Chest, Pintel and Ragetti row a very small rowboat in Cannibal Bay near Cannibal Island until they spot the Black Pearl careened onto shore. After the Prison dog leaps out of the boat and swims, the two pirates grine at each other until suddenly a wave hits and their boat is completely trounced, tumbling to shore.[6] Unlike the final cut of Dead Man's Chest,[3] Pintel and Ragetti's rowboat does not capsize when it reached the island in the film's novelization.[2] A slightly altered scene of the Pintel and Ragetti's boat capsizing was also used in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, notably when the crew of the Black Pearl land on the Black Sand Beach.[7]
