- "Look!"
"Poseidon's Tomb."
"This way." - ―Carina Smyth and Jack Sparrow
Poseidon's Tomb was the supposed final resting place of the legendary god of the sea, Poseidon. The tomb laid beneath the ocean whose entrance was on the Black rock island.
History[]
When the Black Pearl located Black Rock Island, Jack Sparrow, Carina Smyth and Hector Barbossa journeyed through the area. After Carina placed the last piece of the ruby in its place, the sea divided and soon spread to the island causing both Sparrow and Smyth to fall in the gap where they discovered the tomb and the Trident of Poseidon. Following the destruction of the Trident, the route to the area was closed by the rushing seas.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- "Every nation at war is searching for the Trident, Jackie. But it can never be found - as it rests in Poseidon’s watery grave."
"The Tomb of Poseidon?"
"A tomb never to be disturbed, Jackie. For no man should hold the sea in his hands." - ―Teague and Jack Sparrow
For the 2017 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, scenes in Poseidon's Tomb were filmed at Village Roadshow Studios in Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. According to production designer Nigel Phelps, the core of the Tomb's design was based on a gigantic golden shell, which has been eroded over the centuries. Visual effects supervisor Gary Brozenich and his team extended the Tomb set digitally, including walls of water extending four hundred feet on either side.[2]
In a deleted scene from Dead Men Tell No Tales, when Jack Sparrow and Carina Smyth land in Poseidon's Tomb, a whale swims nearby, its right flipper emerging from the wall of water for a few moments, stunning them. The scene was retained in Elizabeth Rudnick's novelization[3] as well as the deleted scene "A Whale in Poseidon's Tomb" featured in the film's Blu-ray releases.
In Jeff Nathanson's 2013 early screenplay draft for Dead Men Tell No Tales, the Tomb of Poseidon was a monumental fortress and the final resting place of Poseidon. Located on Coffin Islands on the outer side of the Devil's Triangle, the tomb was raided by Hector Barbossa's pirates and the ghostly crew of the Silent Mary. The leader of the ghosts, Captain John Brand, used the Trident of Poseidon to sink the Tomb which ended up at the bottom of the ocean.[4]
