- "Jack. These are pterodactyls. They were largely thought to be a thing of legend, but I have a tutor who claims to have uncovered the bones of just such an animal. He also claims that they went extinct millions of years ago."
- ―Fitzwilliam P. Dalton III
The Pterodactyl was a type of flying reptile. It was common during the Mesozoic era.
History[]
Jack Sparrow and Fitzwilliam P. Dalton III encountered the pterodactylus during their adventures with the Timekeeper. Fitzwilliam mentioned that they were thought to be a myth though some people claimed to have found their bones. Though mostly hostile, Jack and Fitzwilliam did briefly befriend one pterodactyl. Jack named it Drag. The flocks assisted them in escaping from a pair of sabertooth tigers.[2][1]
Behind the scenes[]
- Pterodactyls first appear in the 2007 book Jack Sparrow: The Timekeeper.[2] Although Fitzwilliam P. Dalton III identifies the flying reptiles on Isla Esquelética as pterodactyls in The Timekeeper,[2] they are called pterosaurs in the following book, Dance of the Hours.[1]
- Historically, the name "pterodactyl" was coined in 1809 by the French zoologist Georges Cuvier, making its use in Pirates of the Caribbean anachronistic.
