- "This says you are affiliated with the Carlow?"
"It does."
"The Carlow berths here, and I've never seen you, your crew, or this boat." - ―Stuart and Jack Sparrow
The S Carlow was a merchant ship in the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy.
History[]
It is unknown when and where the Carlow was built but by the 1720s[2] she was serving as a merchant ship of the San Silvestre Comapny, based on the island of San Silvestre. An Irishman named Shalvey was appointed as the ship's captain.[1]
One day Shalvey discovered that another Company agent, Stuart, was doctoring the finances, skimming all the profits meant for dockhands. Once he collected enough evidence, Shalvey sailed the Carlow for the Company's headquarters to report the corrupt agent. However, Stuart's right-hand man intercepted the Carlow on the open sea, attacking and killing all nine crew members and mortally wounding Shalvey, leaving him pinned to the bulkhead by a cutlass in the captain's cabin. Before he departed, the killer made a hole in the ship's hull, causing the Carlow to start sinking.[1]
Captain Jack Sparrow and his motley crew, who were searching for the Weather Gauge, came upon the Carlow, and Jack climbed aboard to steal the ship's papers, planning to impersonate the Carlow's crew in front of the customs agent. Inside the cabin Jack found Shalvey, who at first mistook him for his attacker, possibly hallucinating from loss of blood. After taking the ship's papers, Jack turned to Shalvey in an attempt to help him, but the Irishman replied that he knew he was doomed. The only still working part of Shalvey's body was his throat, so he asked Jack for a drink, and the pirate helped him drink from a bottle of rum. A moment later Shalvey died, and a banshee suddenly appeared, mourning Shalvey's death. Since Jack had given the man a last drink of rum, the banshee used the pirate to carry the dead man's soul and blessed Jack for his kindness; for a period of time, the Irishman's greatest strength would be his as well. Jack then left the cabin and reboarded his boat, leaving the Carlow to sink beneath the waves.[1]
