- "Jack! Take in her signage! She's out of San Silvestre."
- ―Joshamee Gibbs
San Silvestre was an island in the Caribbean Sea, located south-east of Port Royal, Jamaica.
History[]
- "This place boasts a richly earned reputation for being nigh unlivable."
- ―Jack Sparrow
Not much is known about the early history of San Silvestre, except that the Spanish attempted to colonize the island at least once. The Indian tribes originally resided in the jungles around the Los Pesadilla river, deep in the interior of the island, but they left the area when the Spanish built a church there. In unknown circumstances, the legendary Weather Gauge ended up in the church. All the priests eventually fell victims to the jungle predators, and a company of conquistadors was sent to find out what happened with them. The Spanish found a ruin full of human skeletons and snakes. Mad with hunger and fever, the conquistadors stayed there, starting to worship a giant snake that resided in the church as a deity, naming her the "Mother of Water". For some reason the snake did not eat them, seemingly protecting them from the other predators in the jungle. The conquistadors would repay the snake by occasionally feeding the beast with other unfortunate people who discovered the church.[2]
At some point before the late 1720s,[3] a British merchant company established a trading outpost at the mouth of the Los Pesadilla river. One day, one of the company's agents, Shalvey, discovered that one of his subordinates, Stuart, was doctoring the finances, skimming all the profits meant for dockhands. Once he collected enough evidence, Shalvey sailed his ship, the S Carlow, for the company's headquarters to report the corrupt agent. However, Stuart's right-hand man intercepted the Carlow on the open sea, attacking and killing all the crew and mortally wounding Shalvey, leaving him pinned to the bulkhead by a cutlass in the captain's cabin. Before he departed, the killer made a hole in the ship's hull, causing the Carlow to start sinking. Captain Jack Sparrow and his motley crew, who were searching for the Weather Gauge, came upon the Carlow, and took the ship's papers, planning to impersonate the Carlow's crew in front of the customs agent. However, when they arrived at the outpost, Jack revealed they were pirates and the Carlow was sunk and her crew was dead, because a banshee blessed him with Shalvey's greatest strength ― honesty. Stuart and his henchman quickly ordered their men to arrest Jack's crew and hang them. However, just as he was being taken to the gallows, Jack managed to free himself and caused dozens of barrels to roll down the hill, knocking down both Stuart and his henchman. When the company workers found Shavley's sealed report in Stuart's coat Jack explained the truth about the sinking of the Carlow. The workers allowed Jack and his crew to leave, planning to hang Stuart instead.[1]
Following the instructions from a treasure map, Jack Sparrow and his crew sailed upriver for a few days, until they found a rock shaped like an albatross. They left their boat and walked into the jungle until they reached the church, discovering it wasn't abandoned as they believed. Misunderstanding the conquistadors' feverish talk of offering his body to worship the most beautiful creature to ever move across the Earth, Jack allowed them to take him into the church where he saw the "Mother of Water", finally realizing what his fate was supposed to be. Jack quickly sprung into action, stabbing the snake's left eye with a broken sword. As the beast chased Jack around the church, Jack found and took the Weather Gauge, and tricked the snake into breaking the column that supported the roof, causing the entire building to collapse, killing the beast. Seeing their deity dead, the remaining conquistadors outside were scared enough to escape, leaving Jack and his crew alone with their prize.[2]
