"We are an unimaginative lot when it comes to naming things." The title of this article is conjectural. |
- "Liang Dao is my older brother. He inherited the title of Pirate Lord from our father."
- ―Sao Feng to Jack Sparrow
This man was the Chinese pirate who served as the Pirate Lord of Singapore and the South China Sea, as well as a governor well as the father of Liang Dao and Sao Feng.
Biography[]
Life and death[]
Little is known of this man's life other than he became the Pirate Lord of Singapore and the South China Sea, as well as had two sons, Liang Dao and Sao Feng.[2] He had also attended the Third meeting of the Brethren Court, which ended "badly" as he told Feng.[3] At some point, the ancestral navigational charts that led to the land beyond death came into the hands of the great Chinese Pirate Lord. The Chinese government couldn't control him, so they made him a governor. He abused his power and was greatly reviled.[1] Through unknown circumstances, the man who was Sao Feng's father died, and passed his position of Pirate Lord to his eldest son along with his piece of eight.[2]
Legacy[]
It was believed that the Pirate Lord of the South China Sea's mantle was passed down to Sao Feng (pictured) from his father.
- "The Court has not met in my lifetime."
"Nor mine."
"And when last it did, my father told me, it ended...badly." - ―Sao Feng and Hector Barbossa
Upon his untimely death, his legacy as a Pirate Lord lived on. Though it was believed that the Pirate Lord of South China Sea's mantle was passed down to Sao Feng from his father,[4] the mantle was actually passed to Feng's brother Liang Dao, only to be killed by Feng himself.[2] Sao Feng would mention his father at least once in a conversation with Hector Barbossa, the Pirate Lord of the Caspian Sea,[4] where he mentioned the Third Brethren Court, and still held the title of Pirate Lord until his own death.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
Overview[]
Sao Feng's father was first mentioned in media relating to the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, notably T.T. Sutherland's junior novelization.[3] He was first identified as "Sao Feng's father" in the 2010 update of the Pirates of the Caribbean website.[1]
In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay of At World's End, Sao Feng and Hector Barbossa talk about the Brethren Court that his father told him that the Third Brethren Court ended badly. Although the scene was omitted from the final cut of the film, it was retained in the 2007 novelization,[3] 2009 novelization,[5] and in the deleted scene titled "A Pox on Us All" originally released in Blu-ray releases in 2011.[6]
Inconsistencies[]
In the "Inside the Brethren Court" feature in the At World's End DVD release, it was said that Sao Feng's title of Pirate Lord was passed down to him from his father.[4] However, it was revealed that Sao Feng took the title from his brother Liang Dao in Legends of the Brethren Court: Rising in the East.[2]
In Jack Sparrow: Dance of the Hours, Chapter Five, it is stated that Jack Sparrow's worst nightmare involves "a certain Pirate Lord from Singapore and a certain tentacled captain."[7] Since Sao Feng did not become the Pirate Lord of Singapore until he overthrew his brother Liang Dao, at least eight years after the end of the Jack Sparrow series,[2] it is more than likely "a certain Pirate Lord from Singapore" is one of Feng's predecessors. However, whether that predecessor is Liang Dao or his father is unknown.
