Scotland was a country in northwest Europe. It consisted of the northern part of the island of Great Britain. To the south-east, Scotland shared its only land border with England; the country was surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, the North Sea to the north-east and east, and the Irish Sea to the south. Edinburgh was the capital and Glasgow was the largest of the cities of Scotland. In 1707, Scotland and England were united into Great Britain.

Both Bootstrap Bill Turner and his son, William Turner, were born in Glasgow, Scotland.[1][2][3] Bellamy, Ian Mercer, and even the legendary Davy Jones were also believed to hail from Scotland, having retained Scottish accents up to their deaths.[citation needed]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Scotland currently doesn't appear in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe.
  • Glasgow, Scotland being Will Turner and Bootstrap Bill Turner's "Place of Origin" was first described in Zizzle's action figures for Dead Man's Chest.[1][2] This information was later added into the official Pirates website circa 2010.[3]
  • Regarding on how Davy Jones would speak in Dead Man's Chest, the Pirates producers needed something that would sound different from all the other characters and to give Jones a bit of power and authority. Director Gore Verbinski at one point suggested that Davy Jones should speak Dutch, taking from that Davy Jones' ship was called the "Flying Dutchman", or Norweigan. Though the previous suggestions were all authentic within the story, actor Bill Nighy decided to use a Scottish accent; despite the fact that Nighy's mother grew up in Glasgow, Nighy himself had stated it was because he could do an accent.[4][5] Despite this, Zizzle's action figure for Dead Man's Chest states that Davy Jones' "Place of Origin" was presumably Great Britain.[1][6]
