- "What's wrong? The beach is right there."
"Je m'en fou j'y vais pas, c'est beaucoup trop dangereux."
"What?"
"J'y vais pas c'est trop dangereux je vous ai dis. Bon voyage, monsieur!" - ―Will Turner and Shrimper's brother
This man was the brother of a shrimper who spoke French. Aboard their shrimp boat, the shrimper and his brother operated somewhere around the island of Tortuga and also traded spice for "long pork". As Will Turner found a ship with black sails that was careened at Pelegosto Island, the Shrimper gave his brother a nod as Will climbed into his tiny rowboat.[1] But halfway to the beach, the brother stopped rowing, refusing to bring Will the remainder of the journey, saying that it was too dangerous. Both the shrimper and his brother were likely aware of the cannibalistic nature of the island's inhabitants. The Shrimper's Brother told Will "Bon voyage, monsieur!" and let him jump out of the boat before turning around.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- The Shrimper's Brother first appeared in the junior novelization for the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest,[1] where he was played by Sylver.[2]
- In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay for Dead Man's Chest, the Shrimper's Brother was only named "BROTHER" and described as a bug-eyed man with a perpetual scared look on his face as he row. The Brother says very quickly in French: "End of the trip. No, end of trip. Trip end. Goodbye!" He pulls on one oar, turning the boat around, leaving Will has no choice but to jump out.[3] Although it was never stated in the final cut of the film, the Shrimper's Brother did speak French to Will.[2]
