- "My wife ran off with my dog, and I'm drunk for a month, and I don't give an ass rat's if I live or die."
"Perfect!" - ―Skinny Man and Joshamee Gibbs
This man was a skinny man who resided in the pirate port of Tortuga. At some point after his wife ran off with his dog, this man notably became drunk for a month without a care on if he lived or died. One night at a catina, the skinny man was one of four sailors hired by Joshamee Gibbs to serve under Captain Jack Sparrow aboard the Black Pearl. Although the man was not informed, Captain Sparrow intended to give his new recruits over to Davy Jones, as one of ninety-nine souls in order to appease Sparrow debt to Jones. However, the man was among the many casualties of the attack on the Black Pearl by Jones' leviathan, the Kraken.
Biography[]
Little is known of this man's life, other than he was married to an unknown female, owned a pet dog, and had a reputation as a "Skinny Man" in the pirate port of Tortuga. However, the skinny man's wife ran away with his dog, and he became an alcoholic who was drunk in the next month. No longer caring if he lived or died, he was always seen in Tortuga's taverns.
In a crowded cantina in Tortuga, Jack Sparrow and Joshamee Gibbs went about the business of recruiting Jack's much needed ninety-nine souls for Davy Jones, though Gibbs instead promised an unforgettable journey aboard the Black Pearl to a line of hopeful sailors. Of course, being as it was Tortuga, every one of them was beaten and broken down.[3] Among the few interviews Gibbs made, the Skinny Man signed up, along with several others. When Captain Sparrow was about to be shot a flintlock pistol held by James Norrington, former commodore of the British Royal Navy and now penniless drunk, the new crew mates demonstrated their loyalty to their captain by restraining the crazed drunk, causing him to shoot up towards the ceiling, inadvertently starting a bar fight. In the ensuing chaos, the crew escaped, and left aboard the Pearl. When the ship sailed to Isla Cruces, where the fabled Dead Man's Chest belonging to Jack's enemy Davy Jones, Sparrow and several trusted crew mates rowed ashore, while the old man stayed under the command of Gibbs. The Skinny man stood with many other recruits on the main deck as the Flying Dutchman surfaced from the depths of the ocean, and watched as his captain made a fool of himself trying to bargain with Jones.[1]
The Dutchman opened fire on the Black Pearl, damaging her greatly. The ship managed to outrun the ghostly Dutchman, but would soon suffer a worse fate. The whole ship shook, and fellow crewman Lejon yelled that they must have hit a reef. This was not the case; crewman Will Turner knew of what was happening, and the crew was ordered to get to their stations as the Kraken was about to attack. This man served as a cannoneer, stationed at a cannon along with another pirate. They were terrified as they saw the Kraken's tentacles climbing up the side of the ship, and immediately opened fire on command along with all of the other cannons. However, the longboats were destroyed by the Kraken, so they had to fight again. The Skinny man prepared for the coming fight, readying the gunpowder. When they ran out of gunpowder, Will Turner suggested they use rum instead, and the whole crew went silent waiting for Gibbs' approval. Gibbs reluctantly agreed to this, and the Skinny man cried in despair as he and the crew relayed the order. The second Kraken attack would come suddenly and swiftly as the entire ship shook again, and its tentacles came crashing through into the ship. This man was crushed by the tentacles.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The Skinny Man was portrayed by Georges Trillat in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.[1] Although the Skinny Man had no lines of dialogue nor was mentioned by name in the 2006 junior novelization, it is suggested that the Skinny Man does make his first appearance in the novelization due to the fact that four men were still interviewed by Joshamee Gibbs, exactly like the film.[3]
- In Dead Man's Chest, the Skinny Man spoke with a French accent.[1] While unconfirmed, this may indicate that this man was one of the French colonists of Tortuga.
