Susan Beckett was the wife of Cutler Beckett's cousin, Matthew Beckett. She wrote to Cutler while he was working for the E.I.T.C. in Calabar, asking him to recommend her twelve year old son, John, to become an officer in the East India Trading Company because Beckett's father, Jonathan Beckett Sr., rejected him a position in his family's shipping company. Cutler agreed to, even though he didn't really like the boy, simply to annoy his father.
