- "What's happening, father?"
"There are still men loyal to me here. A ship is waiting. I have arranged a passage to England and sent a letter to the King, detailing what has happened here." - ―Elizabeth Swann and Weatherby Swann
The Terpsichore was a brig commanded by Captain Hawkins, and was docked at Port Royal during Elizabeth Swann's incarceration at the Fort Charles prison.
History[]
The Terpsichore was docked in Port Royal when Lord Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company and dozens of Company men arrived and forcefully took control of the town, in the process arresting the Governor's daughter, Elizabeth Swann, and her fiancee William Turner Jr., as well as presenting warrants for the arrest of former British Royal Navy Commodore James Norrington and famed pirate Captain Jack Sparrow.[2]
Governor Weatherby Swann struck a deal with Hawkins, gaining passage back to England for Elizabeth aboard the ship. However, Hawkins was killed on the dock by Ian Mercer before Elizabeth could board.
Behind the scenes[]
- The Terpischore first appeared, although unnamed, as "the waiting ship" in the junior novelization for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.[1] The ship was portrayed by the Unicorn in the film.[2][3]
- While unnamed in the final cut of Dead Man's Chest and related media, the Terpsichore was named in the film's production notes and press kit.[3] The Unicorn previously appeared in The Curse of the Black Pearl as a different ship, the Henrietta.[4]
- According to an article on The St. Lucia STAR news website, the ship played by the Unicorn in Dead Man's Chest was named the Terrasaw.[4]
- In Greek mythology, Terpsichore was one of the nine Muses, the ancient Greek goddesses of music, song and dance.
- In a deleted scene from Dead Man's Chest titled "The Map Is Finished", the crew of the Terpsichore (or possibly an identical-looking vessel) looks on as the Flying Dutchman surfaces in Port Royal's harbor, after James Norrington delivers the heart of Davy Jones to Cutler Beckett.[5]
