Tripoli is the capital city of Libya. It is on the northern edge of the Sahara desert by a bay in the Mediterranean Sea. Along with being Libya's most populous city, Tripoli is also its largest sea port and most important center of industry and trade.
It was founded by the Phoenicians, but because of its desirable position as a center of trade, Tripoli has changed hands often. The city has belonged to the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Muslims, the Knights Hospitaller, and the Turks.
Commodore James Norrington chased Jack Sparrow and the Black Pearl to a location just off Tripoli, but lost his quarry after attempting to sail through a hurricane. By this time, Tripoli was under the rule of the Turks and a favorite haunt for the Barbary Corsairs lead by Ammand the Corsair.
