Pirates of the Caribbean Wiki

Hey, so last night I just happened to come across a treasure trove of previously-lost lore from an older version of the official DisneyPirates.com site! Much of the it was tangled in source code and it took me some time to dig it up - so to speak - but here it is:

(Note: typos and other mistakes were left in as they were, unchanged aside from censoring a word that the auto-filter wouldn't allow me to post)

The Flying Dutchman boasts powerful armaments such as the Triple Gun and the Capstan Hammer, a massive mechanism designed to summon Davy Jones' sea minions by thumping against the ship's hull. Weapons & Artifacts[]

Jack Sparrow’s Pistol[]

This pistol carries a single shot - and as Sparrow says: "When you've only got one shot, it's best to wait for the opportune moment."

That shot is intended for one man alone - Barbossa, who marooned Sparrow on a desolate island with the pistol and its single load. Upon Sparrow's escape, he embarked on a quest to reclaim the Pearl.

It was during the battle at Isla de Muerta that Sparrow found his opportunity - when the curse of the Aztec Gold was lifted and the pirates of the Black Pearl became human - and vulnerable - again. Jack discharged his one bullet into Barbossa's chest.

The first thing the mutineer felt in years was also the last: the pain of death.

William “Bootstrap Bill” Turner’s Black Knife[]

Handed from father to son through the generations, the knife is a gift Bootstrap Bill had always meant to pass on in turn to his boy, Will Turner. It is the greatest gift Bill can give his son - but not nearly enough to make up for all he never gave Will as a father.

The blade is put to good (albeit ironic) use, protecting Will from an attack by his own confused, demented father who is under the power and control of Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman.

When Bootstrap is stabbed with the knife aboard the Flying Dutchman, it restores his clarity of mind - and allows him to save his son from Davy Jones.

Norrington’s Ceremonial Sword[]

Forged by Will Turner, the sword was a gift from Governor Weatherby Swann to celebrate Captain James Norrington's promotion.

Swann believed Will Turner's sodden mentor, Mr. Brown, had crafted the sword. Later, upon losing Elizabeth Swann's affections to Will Turner, Norrington acknowledged the sword's true craftsman, saying, "I expect the man who made it to show the same care and devotion in all aspects of his life." The sword eventually became an emblem of Norrington's downfall and used as a decoration in Lord Cutler Beckett's office after Norrington abandoned his duties in a depression over his lost love.

Norrington left the Royal Navy and joined the East India Trading Company. He was given the position of admiral, and had his sword returned.

Norrington treasured the sword throughout his career and used it in a final act of bravery. Mortally wounded himself, he made a desperate lunge and ran the sword through Davy Jones, who calmly removed it from his body as Norrington died at his feet.

Later, during his final battle aboard the Flying Dutchman, Jones drew Norrington's sword and stabbed Will Turner, returning it to its original maker...and sealing both their fates.

Jack’s Hat[]

A captain is not a captain without his tricorne hat. The nicer your hat, the more important you are.

Aboard ship, a hat was more than a symbol. It was also a vital shield from the sun's baking rays, protecting the wearer's tender head.

Perhaps Sparrow should have been more conscientious about wearing his hat in his youth...

Jack Sparrow’s Compass[]

The compass Jack Sparrow holds dear may seem to be merely a punchline to some. As Commodore Norrington says,"Taking stock, you've got a pistol with only one shot, a compass that doesn't point north ... and no ship. You are without a doubt the worst pirate I have ever heard of."

Not until Jack Sparrow seeks the Dead Man's Chest do we learn how truly special Sparrow's compass is. While it doesn't point north, it does point to what his heart desires most.

Elizabeth’s Medallion[]

The pirate medallion was found by young Elizabeth Swann around the neck of a young boy who had just been rescued at sea: Will Turner.

It had been a gift from Will's father, William "Bootstrap Bill" Turner, who Will never knew was a pirate. Swann held on to the medallion for years until a fateful raid on Port Royal by the cursed Black Pearl.

It is revealed that the medallion was the last piece of the stolen Aztec Gold needed to lift the curse that turned all those who stole it into the skeletal undead. The gold piece was returned, along with the blood of Will Turner, lifting the curse and returning the cursed crew of the Black Pearl to mortal humans - resulting in their defeat.

The Aztec Gold Treasure of Cortes[]

A trove of 882 Aztec Gold coins, each emblazoned with a skull, was given to Hernan Cortes as a payment to stop his ravaging of the Aztec people.

He took the gold and betrayed that agreement, slaying thousands more. The heathen gods placed a curse on the gold as a result.

Any who took the gold were stricken with the curse, consumed by greed yet eternally empty. They became skeletal husks by moonlight, with unloving and unfeeling souls.

Letters of Marque[]

Carte blanche for piracy from the King's Court, the Letters of Marque were used by Lord Beckett to blackmail Will Turner into retrieving Jack Sparrow's compass in "Dead Man's Chest." With blank spaces waiting to be filled, the letters are returned to Beckett with the surprising name of James Norrington written in blood, as much as ink. The Letters of Marque give legitimacy to pirates by making them privateers, as much a set of shackles as a pardon to set the pirate free.

Beckett’s Cane, The Pirate Brand[]

Lord Cutler Beckett, who serves the interests of the East India Trading Company uses a walking cane both as a fashion statement and as a tool of intimidation. The cane's tip has a branding iron on it, the letter "P" for Pirate. Years ago, it was used on Captain Jack Sparrow, and Sparrow bears the scar to this day.

Liar’s Dice[]

The crew of the Flying Dutchman play this game for the only stake the men have left to wager: years of servitude. Everyone has a set of dice in a cup. They turn the dice without anyone else seeing their numbers, then state their totals - true or just a bluff: "Four threes." Call that a bluff? If wrong, you lose. The next move must go higher: "Five fours." The next player must call it - bluff or truth? The higher the number you claim, the greater the risk of being caught bluffing and called a liar.

Davy Jones’ Chest and Heart[]

The chest was buried on Isla Cruces by Davy Jones, with his beating heart still inside. Why would a man who can only walk the land once every 10 years hide the most important thing in his life under sand and soil? To keep it safe from potential mutineers aboard his ship and away from his own haunted eyes. To still the heart would bring Davy Jones' final death. To restore it would return his humanity and the pain of his lost love. Better to keep it hidden away ... but the man controlling the chest (and hence the Flying Dutchman), Lord Cutler Beckett, did not agree.

To keep Jones in his power, Beckett places the chest under armed guard by British Marines aboard the Flying Dutchman. There it remained, through various attempts to seize it, until it was pinched by Jack Sparrow, who planned to stab the heart and become an immortal captain sailing the seas forever. Those plans were stymied when Davy Jones stabbed Will Turner, forcing Sparrow to choose immortality or the life of a man he almost calls a friend. The heart was stabbed and Jones met his final fate in the stormy retribution of his spurned lover, Calypso.

The hand on the hilt of the blade belonged to Will Turner, who became the new captain of the Flying Dutchman - and whose heart was placed for safekeeping within the chest. Years later, the chest containing Will's heart remains under the protection of his wife, Elizabeth, who waits, with their nine-year old son, for the captain of the Flying Dutchman to make landfall at decade's end...

Key to Davy Jones’ Chest[]

Around his neck, protected from any who would seek to claim it, was the key to Davy Jones' chest. Inside the chest was his beating heart, through which he controlled the Flying Dutchman, and by extension, the Seven Seas. Jack Sparrow found a drawing of the key and, suspecting its purpose, set in motion the events of the "Dead Man's Chest" epic story.

Sao Feng’s Charts[]

The ancestral navigational charts of Sao Feng were kept under careful guard in one of his uncle's temples. Clutched in the arms of a wizened monk, who reluctantly turned the charts over to Feng during a meeting with Barbossa, they were said to provide the route to "the Farthest Gate," which was where Barbossa must travel to rescue Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones' Locker. The history of the charts dates back to a time called the Dark Dynasty when the Emperor of an Asian land sent out four navigators to explore the world outside his kingdom and create a comprehensive map. The navigators left and returned 100 years later having not aged a month - the result of their labors was this infinitely complex map of other worlds. Over the years it was stolen, re-stolen, added to, and doodled upon in many languages by pirates, explorers, thieves, and lords. Finally it came into the hands of Sao Feng's father, a great Chinese Pirate Lord. The Chinese government couldn't control him so they made him a governor. He abused that power and was greatly reviled.

After his untimely death, the charts were inherited by Sao Feng, who didn't entirely believe in the metaphysical elements of the map - but certainly understood the power they represented. The Hai Peng, one of Feng's ships, was loaned to Barbossa, Elizabeth Swann, and Will Turner, along with the charts, to help them find the end of the world. The charts contained rotating circles, which when turned, caused the map to reconfigure.

"Nothing is set," complained Will Turner. "It can't be as accurate as modern charts."

"No," agreed Feng's lieutenant, Tai Huang. "But it leads to more places."

The charts also contained poems and riddles, which needed to be deciphered in order to truly understand their instructions. The charts fulfill their promise, as Barbossa notes, "Aye, we're good and lost now. You have to be lost, to find a place as can't be found. Elseways, everyone would know where it was, aye?"

They heard the roar of churning water and were dragged toward at the supposedly mythical site depicted at the edges of every seafaring map - a tremendous, waterfall cascading into the abyss. The Hai Peng was drawn over the falls and into Davy Jones' Locker. Later, to escape the Locker, the crew tried to decipher the poem on the chart: "Over the edge, back, over again, sunrise sets at the flash of green." They must invert the ship, then roll it over at sunset, so that when the ship completes its roll and pops back up in the water, it will be setting at sunrise. The flash of green is a seafaring legend marking the passage of a soul lost at sea - in this case, the escape of the crew from the Locker.

Their water fouled from the inversion, Turner saw an island on the charts near their point of reentry and headed there to resupply. Through twists and turns, shifts in captains, vessels, and crews, as well as a climactic confrontation between the armadas of the East India Company and the Pirate Brethren, the charts remained in Barbossa's hands. After stealing the Black Pearl from under Sparrow's nose and setting sail for the promise of immortality, Barbossa must show his crew he possessed the charts to set their minds at ease for having double-crossed Sparrow. The case containing the charts was empty... Though he had lost his boat, Jack Sparrow had not lost his sense of purpose. He now had the Map to the Fountain of Youth - actually a separate map hiding within Sao Feng's navigational charts. The Fountain of Youth map was clearly centuries younger and written by Spaniards, but contained some esoteric elements. The removal of the Fountain of Youth map did not destroy the charts, but it was revealed that there were several other unseen maps on that piece of paper, now in two separate pieces.

The Nine Pieces of Eight[]

Sao Feng's Rope Pendant: Worn around his neck, the rope pendant was Sao Feng's symbol of captaincy and marked his standing among the Pirate Lords. With his dying breath, he passed the pendant and all it stood for to Elizabeth Swann during battle with the Flying Dutchman. The holder of this talisman is the Pirate Lord of the South China Sea.

Jack Sparrow's Moroccan Glass Beads and Coin: If every bit of body art, trinket, bead, and bangle worn by Jack Sparrow has an individual story to tell, then the headband dangle he wears must have quite a saga indeed. The holder of this talisman is the Pirate Lord of the Caribbean.

Ragetti's Eye: Plunked down by Barbossa to mark his presence in the gathering of the Pirate Brethren, Ragetti's wooden eye is Barbossa's piece of eight. This means every time Ragetti strides the deck of any ship presided over by Barbossa, technically, he is that ship's captain without knowing it! The holder of this talisman is the Pirate Lord of the Caspian Sea.

Mistress Ching's Fishing Line and Hook: It is a Pacific Rim tradition for two sailors to trade fishing line with each other. With hook and line, a sailor will never go hungry. The holder of this talisman is Pirate Lord of the Pacific Ocean.

Ammand the Corsair's Pewter Brady Goblet: Outcast sisters in Spanish nunnery, forbidden to take the sacraments, used this goblet. In piracy, reverence for traditions and gods is always based more on personal preference than religious edicts. The holder of this talisman is Pirate Lord of the Black Sea.

Villanueva's Bottle: This piece of eight is the neck of a broken bottle with the cork still in it, wrapped in leather. Pirates love to drink, not least because fresh water is often hard to find, so a bottle makes a fitting pirate talisman indeed. The holder of this talisman is Pirate Lord of the Adriatic Sea.

Chevalle's Spectacles: This pair of spectacles with a cracked lens may be a nod to the many navigators aboard ship who would spend their evenings - and their eyesight - staring at maps and the stars. The holder of this talisman is Pirate Lord of the Mediterranean Sea.

Jocard's Tobacco Cutters: Holding special meaning for Jocard, who is an escaped slave, these tobacco cutters were stolen from a British plantation. The bearer of this talisman is the Lord of the Atlantic Ocean.

Sumbhadjee's Snuff Box: This snuff box is made from the horn of a calf sacrificed during the crossing of a great plateau. There must be a fascinating story explaining how a Hindu priest came to own a snuff box made of a sacrificed cow, as Hindus consider cows sacred. But pirates are practical businessmen who live by their own rules, and if Sumbhadjee is all right with it, who is anyone else to judge? The bearer of this talisman is the Lord of the Indian Ocean.

One might wonder, if these pieces of eight were collected at the beginning of time, why are so many of them contemporary items? The answer is as mysterious as the sea's nature: Perhaps it's a simple twist of fate, or maybe the talismans take on the form most meaningful for their bearers - at any rate, it is clear that these items are filled with the magic of Calypso.

The Code of the Pirate Brethren[]

Transcribed from the words of Morgan and Bartholemew, the Code of the Pirate Brethren is watched by the Keeper of the Code, Captain Teague, who protects it under lock and key with a willingness to fire his pistol at any who would tarnish its pages. Within this tome are all the rules by which pirates are expected to ply their trade. But really, they're not rules so much as guidelines...

Davy Jones’ Locket[]

When we first spy the locket, it hangs from the pipes of the organ in the captain's quarters of Davy Jones aboard the ghost ship, the Flying Dutchman. It is a keepsake containing a picture we cannot see, a memento that stirs tragic emotion in the hidden heart of Davy Jones, a reminder of the best and worst time of his life. Later, when Jones visits the hoodoo priestess Tia Dalma, who is jailed in the brig of the Black Pearl, we see that she holds a matching locket. They were once joined in love. Jones' locket softly echoes the distant sounds of his organ, announcing his arrival aboard ship. We learn the locket contains a picture of Tia Dalma, the human form of his lost love, the sea goddess who betrayed him and whom he betrayed in turn - Calypso.

Tia Dalma’s Crab Legs[]

Scattered by the hoodoo priestess atop barrels or the wooden planks of a ship's deck, the dried crab claws are used for divinations, prognostications and incantations. They are used to tell Jack and Will's fortunes in "Dead Man's Chest" and to call forth legions of crabs to Tia Dalma's aid as the Hai Peng falls over the edge of the world in "At World's End."

Tia Dalma’s Ring[]

Found beside the crab legs on a table in her bayou shack and quickly palmed by Jack Sparrow in "Dead Man's Chest" for reasons of his own, the ring turned out to serve as a touchstone that Tia Dalma used to locate Sparrow within the ethereal landscapes of Davy Jones' Locker in "At World's End."

Bestiary[]

Prison Dog[]

A beloved mainstay of the original "Pirates of the Caribbean" attraction, the Prison Dog was introduced in the Fort Charles prison on Port Royal, tantalizingly holding a key ring in his mouth, denying the men trapped in the cells a chance at freedom. An imprisoned Jack Sparrow reminded his cellmates that "the dog is never going to move," a sly nod to the dog's 40 years of service on the Theme Park ride. But the dog proved him wrong, fleeing when the cursed pirates of the Black Pearl attacked Port Royal. Though unconfirmed, whispered tales among fearful and hopeful pirates indicated that the keys on the ring the Prison Dog carries in his mouth are capable of mysteriously conforming to fit any lock. In "Dead Man's Chest," Governor Swann was dumbfounded that he couldn't free his captive daughter from the Fort Charles cells. "Where is that dog with the keys?" he asked. Later, we saw the Prison Dog miles away on a longboat with Pintel and Ragetti, approaching Cannibal Island. For reasons and through methods unknown, the Prison Dog freed Pintel and Ragetti to search for the Black Pearl, which they found beached on Cannibal Island. Making a valiant stand to protect Jack Sparrow against the oncoming Pelegostos Cannibals, the Prison Dog was left alone to face a lot of hungry cannibals, who seemed willing to substitute real dog for sea dog. With a wag of his tail, the Prison Dog ran off, his fate unknown. But surely a dog with the ability to free anyone or anything would have little trouble freeing ... himself?

Jack the Monkey[]

"Jack" the Monkey is the pet capuchin monkey of Captain Barbossa, serving as a valuable spy and companion. The creature, whose name is gesture to mingled affection and animosity toward Barbossa's nemesis, Captain Jack Sparrow, was cursed along with the rest of the crew of the Black Pearl. Mangy and decrepit under the pale light of the moon, the undead monkey nonetheless amused his master with wacky, and sometimes malevolent, antics. Whether dangling the cursed medallion within tantalizing grasp of a trapped Will Turner or retrieving an apple for Barbossa, Jack is as much a scallywag as any pirate that sails the seas. At the end of "The Curse of the Black Pearl," the monkey was left on Isla de Muerta along with the body of his beloved Barbossa. The monkey removed a single gold coin from the cursed Aztec treasure, which was wisely left behind by the British Navy. Hence, "Jack" the Monkey was cursed again, appearing in "Dead Man's Chest" as perpetual target practice for Jack Sparrow's pistol. Exactly how the monkey made his way back onto the Black Pearl is a mystery yet to be explained. "Jack" the Monkey was traded to Tia Dalma in "Dead Man's Chest," and it was implied that he had something to do with Barbossa's resurrection. Upon Barbossa's return, "Jack" the Monkey jumped right where he belonged, onto the shoulder of his master. Jack followed his master to Singapore in search of Sao Feng's charts that would lead to the "World's End," and after playing a role in a diversion there as an organ-grinder with Tia Dalma, he became the first known monkey to survive a journey to Davy Jones' Locker and live to squeal about it. When Sparrow asked whether anybody had come to rescue him from the Locker simply because they missed him, only "Jack" the Monkey gleefully raised his arm. Jack remained in Barbossa's company for much of "World's End," only taking an active role when he snatched Sparrow's piece of eight for Barbossa. The monkey remained with his master, the newly restored captain of the Black Pearl, as the ship sailed the seas in search of adventure and plunder.

Cotton’s Parrot[]

We first met the blue and gold macaw parrot atop his master Cotton's shoulder at the docks of Tortuga, as Jack Sparrow was recruiting potential crew for the purloined H.M.S. Interceptor. When Sparrow asked Cotton if he was prepared to face death as a member of his crew, Joshamee Gibbs explained, "He's a mute, sir. Poor devil had his tongue cut out. So he trained the parrot to talk for him. No one's yet figured how."

The parrot responded to Jack's question with a squawk, "Wind in your sails! Wind in your sails!" With a sheepish shrug, Gibbs added, "Mostly we figure that means, 'yes.'"

The parrot remained aboard the Interceptor, displaying a knack for flight during fight as the cursed Black Pearl attacked the ship. Later, he became a valued pet when the Black Pearl was retaken and used to escape Isla de Muerta by Joshamee Gibbs. When Sparrow escaped hanging at Port Royal, the parrot appeared on the parapets of Fort Charles indicating that the Black Pearl had returned. The parrot spoke for Cotton, repeating or accepting orders, but also often making cynical or pointed statements that might be Cotton's - or might very well not. The extent of the link between Cotton and the parrot, or how it developed, remains unknown. The parrot's history with pirates precedes "The Curse of the Black Pearl," as he stood atop Barbossa's shoulder aboard the Wicked Wench in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" Theme Park ride.

The Kraken[]

The Kraken is a great leviathan of the deep whose legend has been told by sailors throughout time. A giant squid or colossal octopus described in European, Mediterranean, and Asian sailing lore, it is said to emerge from the waves to pluck crewmen from the decks as snacks before dragging entire ships into the depths. It is unknown whether the Kraken is the last left of its kind or if others exist, but the one encountered in "Dead Man's Chest" is quite possibly one of the largest of all sea beasts. Why the Kraken served Davy Jones, or what kind of hold he had on the creature, is as yet unrevealed, but it would attack any man marked with the Black Spot and drag down any ship upon which the marked man sailed. In its encounter with the Black Pearl, the Kraken was severely wounded when Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, and Jack Sparrow managed to blast the creature in a gunpowder exposure and give the crew time to escape the ship. In "World's End," Beckett says, "This is no longer your world, Jones. The immaterial has become...immaterial. I would have thought you'd learned that when I ordered you to kill your pet." Later, the Kraken's corpse was found on the Black Sand Beach after the Black Pearl was liberated from Davy Jones' Locker.

The Farthest Gate[]

Major Events:

  • - With the use of Sao Feng's ship, the Hai Peng, and his navigational charts that reveal the secrets to finding the Farthest Gate, the Black Pearl crew sailed through frigid icy waters, then placid ocean, until they heard the distant roar of a waterfall and found the ship pulled towards the churning abyss at the edge of the world.
  • - While many in the crew tried desperately to reverse the ship's course, Barbossa called for them to let the Hai Peng be carried away. As Tia Dalma intoned an incantation, the ship went over the falls...

  • - The Black Pearl capsized, rolling underwater and, with the green flash from the sunset, mystically came to be back upright in the real world at sunrise.

Description: For those who want nothing more than to sail the Seven Seas, it is a burning desert under a blazing sun. For someone happy with hot sands underfoot, it would most likely be a frigid Arctic wasteland. Davy Jones' Locker is purgatory dressed up as a personal hell. Black waters, but clear blue skies. Or darkest night and clear blue waters. It is an illogical abyss meant to torture those who have chosen an afterlife of indecision, while serving also to scare those passing through to their final destination.

Black Sand Beach[]

They are surprised to find the desiccating corpse of the Kraken beached on the black sands. After a careful search, they find a well, but the corpse of the East India Trading Company Agent, Steng, fouls its water supply. Placed there by Sao Feng, who knew that if Barbossa escaped the Locker with Jack Sparrow, they'd come up near the Black Sand Beach in need of fresh water, the delay is a decoy that allows the Pirate Lord of Singapore to sack the Black Pearl.

  • - A hasty call to parlay led to broken negotiations and once the Sea Goddess Calypso was freed from her human form aboard the Black Pearl, a raging sea battle commenced.

Description: Shipwreck Island, buttressed by Shipwreck Cove and home to Shipwreck City, is testament to a pirate's general lack of imagination in naming things. Navigating dangerous cross-tides on the approach to the island, a ship must come dangerously close to ramming a sheer cliff wall before navigating a tunnel passage carved in the cliff side. The sea tunnel, called the Devil's Throat, leads to a light in the distance and an arrival in Shipwreck Cove. In the center of the cove, amidst the moored pirate ships from across the Seven Seas, is Shipwreck City, hewn from countless broken, derelict ships. The city is very active with kids at play and merchants hawking their wares. The abandoned hull of a massive ship serves as the chamber hall for the gathering of the Pirate Brethren. Curved spars line the chamber like the ribs of some prehistoric beast and a table has been crafted around the mast of the wreck. A globe of the Earth with several swords impaled in it at various angles dominates the room - when swords are placed in it represents the attendance of the Pirate Lords.
