BREAKING NEWS! We know that there is a new Pirates of the Caribbean-themed lounge is coming to Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, and we can officially stop calling it the "pirate-themed lounge" because now we know the name. The Beak and Barrel, taking over the former Pirates League space in Adventureland, is scheduled to open in late 2025. Taking the news from the Disney Parks Blog as well as the official website for Walt Disney World.

The Beak and Barrel: New Details from the Pirates of the Caribbean Tavern - Disney Parks Blog

It's time to raise a glass and let out a hearty shout – The Beak and Barrel opens later this year in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom Park! Established by the legendary pirate rumrunner, Captain Meridian "Merry" Goldwyn, and her talkative first mate, Rummy (more on them below), this lively pirate pub will soon welcome swashbucklers, scoundrels, bandits and buccaneers of all ages from every corner of the seven seas.

Meet Rummy[]

As Merry's trusted companion and first mate, Rummy serves as the tavern's quartermaster keeping an eye on the place from his roost high atop the bar. Although retired from seafaring life, Rummy is a dutiful crewman to his beloved Merry, ensuring everything is ship-shape, sharing tales of piracy and leading the bar in a rousing toast or two.

Eagle-eyed Disney fans may notice that Rummy bears a striking resemblance to the original Barker Bird that previously sat at the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean but flew the coop some time ago.

The Mess[]

The largest and central space at The Beak and Barrel was once the mess hall for Spanish soldiers and is now known appropriately as "The Mess." Long tables span the room, allowing for pirates to gather 'round and tell their own tales, while an imposing anchor covered in candles and dripping wax hangs high above.

A large bar anchors one side of the room, cobbled together from salvaged portions of a cursed shipwreck. At its center, the skull-shaped stern holds an impressive collection of grogs and brew. Guests may also spot the Enchanted Rum Bottle, which was gifted to Merry by the enchantress Tia Dalma and seemingly serves as the source of the tavern's specialty brews, or Rummy hobbling along the bar's ledge, greeting the patrons and keeping a close eye on the crew while Merry is away.

Captains' Quarters[]

Inside the Captains' Quarters, visiting pirates can enjoy a taste of the finer life, which was once the living quarters of the Spanish Comandante. However, the fine artwork and drapery hasn't escaped slashing blades or burn marks over the years by rambunctious pirates, and in some places, faded spots on the wall are all that remains of now plundered portraits.

Above the fireplace are mounted five miniature ships in glass bottles, rumored to represent pirates from every corner of the world banding together to defeat tyranny. Keep a weathered eye out, as these mysterious bottles have been known to come alive and engage in a fearsome battle.

There's still plenty more to be discovered inside The Beak and Barrel, but that's enough for today. Be sure to stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog for more details, including the opening date and a first look at some of the sea-worthy selection of drinks and bites fit for pirates of all ages coming soon. It's a pirate's life for us!

Behind This Legendary Dive[]

The Beak and Barrel was established by Captain Merry Goldwyn, and is overseen by Rummy, her chatty parrot quartermaster. This hideaway holds a trove of stories, treasures and magical mysteries… all waiting to be discovered.

Walt Disney Imagineering[]

Some behind the scenes stuff was revealed in Walt Disney Imagineering social media with transcripts. One preview I admit to have missed, as this was back in April, but it may be worth noting as this work was done in Adventureland, and is likely connected to the ongoing work on The Beak and Barrel.

One video from YouTube and Instagram, featuring Senior Production Designer Jim Casey:

"Every decision you make is literally set in stone. There's no time for messing around or second guessing yourself. We're here in Adventureland. I'm here to tell you about our recent concrete work. I kind of look at it as a big abstract painting, which is interesting. I mean, you start off by carving your cracks and you throw your rocks but they have to be in patterns that are organic, and it has to be believable even with the footprints. We try to study animals and how they walk, to get everything to be as authentic as possible. And we try to think of the story like, what would the wagon do, where they would be pulling the wagon, and somebody might walk in front of them and then all the wagon wheels are not perfectly straight, because burros kind of walk in a crooked fashion. So you try to think of all of that so when the people come through that they are totally immersed in the environment and they feel like there are other people here that are part of the story."

One video from YouTube and Instagram, featuring an associate graphic designer Mackenzie:

"As a team, we wanted it to feel like it bridged the gap between the Pirates of the Caribbean world that we see in the films, and kind of that Mark Davis fun Piratey art that you are used to with the attraction. Hi, I'm Mackenzie. I'm an associate graphic designer for Imagineering, and I designed the logo for The Beak and Barrel. When we started development for the logo my mentor Kim and I were pulling a bunch of fonts that we felt like fit within the Pirates world. And we looked at logos in the Adventureland area near Pirates. We wanted our logo to have its own story and its own character. We went with a black letter font that incorporates some fun hidden imagery. Here we have a nod to our Barker Bird, Rummy. In the K, there's actually a little hidden cutlass right here. Getting to support graphics on this project was such a full circle, important moment for me, because Pirates of the Caribbean was my all time favorite ride growing up at Disneyland."

Focusing on Mackenzie's video, which is more related to The Beak and Barrel, as it is the tale behind the logo. There are some cameos throughout the Pirates franchise, from the Map created by James Ward Byrkit for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End ("Yes, this is the map from the third PotC movie!"), the Tortuga Tavern at the Magic Kingdom, and of course the original Imagineer Marc Davis working on the original attraction. It was pretty neat to see the "Why?" decisions were made about the logo's design.

Other news[]

On the same day, there were at least one videos related to Pirates posted. A small moment with Jack Sparrow (er, Captain Jack Sparrow!) at the Magic Kingdom, as captured in this video, was posted with the status: "When isn't Jack Sparrow plotting 🏴‍☠️⚓ (via @jessicaandluis) #DisneyWorld #CaptainJackSparrow #PiratesOfTheCaribbean"

A bit older news, but I saw this post about the all-new shows The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure and Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After, both set to open on May 27, 2025. "Life's full of tough choices, isn't it?" Or you could choose both, as methinks they'll both surely feature the sea witch Ursula and the elegant Captain Hook.

To go even further away from Pirates, specifically "in a galaxy far, far away..." As posted in honor of the 70th Celebration of Disneyland Resort of "Star Wars Day" on May the Fourth, POV videos of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland, presented by Coca-Cola, exclusively on Disney+. Having watched them myself, I have to say, it was pretty neat to experience the ride and a near-empty Disney theme park.

Now the more uncertain news: the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film. Sadly, only MovieWeb.com has a report, but with The Express being the source is...questionable, at best. But for the sake of one's interest and/or curiosity, the report claims a "senior executive" has confirmed that Johnny Depp has met with Disney bosses and "It is very close to a done deal."

"A script is already in place and Disney views this as a series reboot, meaning the door will be wide open for more future episodes for Johnny, despite everything he has been through. They actually had two scripts ready to go – one with Johnny in mind, the other without him – and they are ready to can the one without him."

Personal commentary[]

I'll start with the sixth Pirates movie news. While I am inclined to just say don't believe everything you read on the internet, as The Express is absolutely NOT a reliable source of information, it isn't entirely false as two scripts being developed has been reported before, going by a previous post, but that's about it. I would also like to bring up, going back years ago, the idea that Orlando Bloom could return as Will Turner in fifth film was originally reported online by Moviehole in 2012, where a "separate Disney contact" gave this one-line response: "Will Turner's story might not be finished..." Now I was personally told in 2012 that this news was a fabrication, at least by the time that report came out. Obviously, that changed over time, but this isn't to say that the latest news does (or does not) have any credibility. Bottom line: Never say never, but like every unverified news, I'd take this with a grain of salt.

Now, regarding the more official news, The Beak and Barrel looks fine. Loved seeing the behind-the-scenes about the logo's design, and it was cool seeing Jim Byrkit's Map from At World's End, even if the prop was likely only used for inspiration. The way we're introduced to "Rummy" the Barker Bird is odd, presuming this is meant to be the same as the original Barker Bird, who was given the name "Peg-Leg Pete" in other Disney Parks media, and especially since they are implying "Rummy" is a separate character. Tia Dalma being mentioned is good news, or at least gives me hope that the so-called "reboot" may not affect the emerging, overarching Pirates mythology...but we'll see. And ships in bottles—'nuff said!

Although my biggest question is...will we see any POV Pirates of the Caribbean attraction videos on Disney+?
