So, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales surprisingly received rather good reviews, and, as a Pirates of the Caribbean fan, I enjoyed it on my first viewing. However, once all of the hype and excitement had died down, and I got the film on DvD, I rewatched it, and tried to view it through the eyes of someone who had never heard of Pirates of the Caribbean, and who wasn't a fan. And it was terrible. Cheesy dialogue, cliche characters, cliche story, cliche themes.
Everything was just so predictable, even Carina Smyth being Hector Barbossa's daughter was a predictable twist. The scene with Pierre Kelly and his pirates was pure filler. There was too much humor, and none of it was funny. It just felt like a remake of the great original film. The same themes, character arcs, and even some of the same soundtracks. Anyway, they set up a possible sixth film with the post-credits scene, and I a way I sort of hope they never actually make one. I feel like the Pirates of the Caribbean series, as Joshamee Gibbs said to Jack Sparrow, reached the end of the horizon. Each film now simply feels like a revamp, and I just don't think they'll be able to make another film that holds up to the original, but isn't just the same as the original. Although, it would be interesting to see Davy Jones back as the main villian, and William Turner and Elizabeth Swann as the lead characters. Post what you think in the comments.
